Customer Reviews

Still makes motors hum and vibrate loudly.
Lip Gallegher
The ability to bypass the variable speed control and operate at full speed is very handy as well.
Sebas
This controls that speed and saves you money from buying a new router.

I was looking for a heavy duty (1200+ watt) dimmer to use for my outdoor patio electric infrared heater. This is a much cheaper option than those wall type ($150+) slide dimmers from other brands and works Great! Now I can control the output of the heat on those not so chilly days! There is also a 20 amp model for those with 2000 watt heaters. Btw, this is not rain/moisture proof so DO NOT leave it outdoors. I guess if I ever buy a router, i can also use it for that :)

I got the MLCS9400 to provide speed control for my router, lathe, and a grinder. Out of the box, my first impression is that the product is well made. It has a sturdy hard plastic case, a switch that allow you to toggle between full power and variable power, a 15amp fuse which can be easily replaced. On top of that, on the back behind the dust cover, there is a plastic screw that allows you to adjust the variable speed setting. i.e. to minimized the leakage current on the 0 setting.

The first thing to do is to calibrate the speed control. To do that, hook up a small router, set the dial to 0, and see if starts. If it does, turn the adjustment screw on the back to stop it. And then set the setting to 1. The router should move. If not, adjust again. go back and forth until you have a good balance.

Once calibrated, I then tested it on all 3 tools. It works best for the router where it provided the full speed range (from 0 to 10). But the speed increment isn't very linear. You'll get very little change in rpm on the low settings. And then once pass 5, the speed increases rapidly. This might be typical of these type of universal speed control as they are not designed specifically to compensate for the motor's internal impedance.

And for the lathe and the grinder, since they use induction motors, the motor will hum but not start on settings lower than 9. But once started, you can reduce it to about 5, and lower than that, the motor will stall.

Overall I'm quite satisfied with this product. It is well designed with convenience and safety in mind. Product is very well made for the cheap price.

Well, I've had this product since November 15th 2008. It worked great. This type of accessory is almost necessary if you're using wide blades to be able to cut the wood without burning it. However, this unit just broke on me. Apparently it is not built to withstand an environment of saw dust. Saw dust had been accumilating in the switch machanism for as long as I've had it. Of course, it goes un noticed because it's in the switch, not on it or next to it. Well today enough built up that it shorted the connection and fried the pcu board. So now I just have a router switch, it no longer varies the speed. Fuze still good though. But paying $30 a year isn't worth a variable speed controller. I have a dual vaccuum system in my router table that sucks saw dust under and over the router. So we're not talking about me dipping this controller in saw dust every day. If you can prevent saw dust from going anywhere near the switch, buy it but keep it clean. Otherwise, try a higher quality switch.

I bought this to hook to my angle grinder so that I could dial the speed down when dry polishing granite slabs and tile. It works perfectly for that. With this tool i can now use my $65 4" Makita Grinder to polish and buff my slabs without blowing hundreds on a variable speed angle grinder. The edges of my slabs and tile look great with the polishing set I also bought off of Amazon.

An alternate use is to control a newer Rival Crock Pot so it behaves like the older models!

It helped talking to a company representative to learn that the highest variable speed operates at 80% of full speed. That info changed my expectations.

This control worked as advertised. It is being used as a remote control for a router on a CNC machine.

Was everything I needed to perform perfect cuts with the larger bits installed in my router(P.C. 6902). It only needed minor adjustment (as listed in instructions sheet) to work as desired. After adjustment speed is constant with smooth changes as knob is turned, and no router jerking as it starts. No problems at all with this item. Only complaint is amazon's slow shipping (took a week to arrive in same town as shipped from!)
