Book Description

October 1, 2010

From forty-five talented and prolific DreamWorks Studio Art Directors, Character Designers, Production Designers and Visual Development Artists comes the first title of its kind in which an Animation studio creates a book showcasing the art work that its artists create for the sake of creation.

Moonshine features artwork that is made during the precious little time of day when the contributors are not working on stunning upcoming movies such as Puss in Boots, The Croods, Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom, Megamind, Guardians, Scared Shrekless and Kung Fu Panda Holiday; these artists amaze us with their individualistically styled images that they create after dark at DreamWorks Studios.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of artists to check out, November 21, 2010
This review is from: MOONSHINE: DREAMWORKS ARTISTS...AFTER DARK! (Paperback)
Length:: 0:34 Mins

Having own a few DreamWorks art books, I always wondered when their collaborative art book would be out. And it's finally out, as Moonshine.

49 artists from DreamWorks has their personal art featured. This includes art from character designers, visual development artists, production designers and art directors. You will see very familiar names like Nicolas Marlet, Nathan Fowkes, Dominique Louis, Chris Appelhans (typo error on contents page, guys!), Paul Lasaine and a whole lot more of talented artists.

The art is beautiful and varied, ranging from sketches to background paintings. I must point out that this book feels very different from your DreamWorks movie art books as there's no overlaying theme and only personal works are featured.

I do recognise some of their styles and is pleasantly surprised and delighted to find that Samuel Michlap has a few of his impressionist-style paintings inside. Also characters from Nicolas Marlet are easy to spot.

The good part about this book is you get to discover new artists, together with their websites and blogs which are listed in the index. So you can check out even more art online.

Nice compilation.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cute but not worth publishing., January 10, 2011

This review is from: MOONSHINE: DREAMWORKS ARTISTS...AFTER DARK! (Paperback)
This book was disappointing. Looks like the result of a "hey, let's publish a book with all the scraps we have around!" type midnight meeting. I was hoping for a book of the quality of "Christian Schellewald LA/SF: A sketchbook from California" but this was a book with no rhyme or reason and very little meat. While there are few good drawings, a lot of them seem like filler. Some nice plates of art by Chris Appelhans, Nathan Fowkes, Sam Michlap, Sylvain Deboissy, Marco Mateu and Schellenwald but not their best or most interesting. Again, these are good artists but publishing a book requires a more thoughtful approach.
