Editorial Reviews

An honest and intimate look at the complexities of grief and healing, "Motherland" is about resilience, triumph of the human spirit and the power of unconditional love. It also reminds us of the vastly different ways in which disparate cultures confront personal loss. Each year over eight million families around the world suffer the loss of a child. In Jennifer Steinman's moving and inspiring documentary film, a 17-day trip to South Africa transforms the lives of six grieving mothers from across the US. Unexpectedly and eight thousand miles from home, each finds comfort and healing in a landscape that appears, at first, to offer little more than melancholy. Prior to their journey, the six women have each suffered the death of a child, but otherwise have little in common. And although the anticipation of a long, emotional journey with a group of strangers evokes anxiety, the women all share a desire to make sense of their tragedies and to move forward with their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST SEE FOR A PARENT WHO HAS LOST A CHILD OR NOT April 19, 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
My 18 year old pass away May 2009, and I was informed about this movie by a parent in "Compassionate Friends" a group for parents and siblings who has lost children. I truely feel like EACH and EVERY one of them really need to see this movie to confirm what you feel is not crazy. The isolation feelings and the roller coaster rides of emotions you go on from the time you here of your childs death until present day. The replays in your mind of when they were alive and how impossible and empty you feel now. Even when you have other children their is no replacing any of your children and the time you carried them (or was told you were pregrant) until the day of the funeral. IF you are so blessed to NEVER experince this you should watch it if you know a co-work or family member or even a friend who has lost a child because you can really walk in their shoes and learn how to treat people. Some people say the DUMBEST things when trying to comfort a person who has lost a child. Like "THEY ARE IN A BETTER PLACE" if you are so sure of that why don't you send your child their to join MINE? A parent should NEVER have to bury a child but if you do things like this help a community of understanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent For All Mothers Who Have Lost A Child February 15, 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I watched Motherland six months after the death of my 19 year old son. I deliberately watched it alone because I knew I would cry. Tears are good, though - they help you get further along this terrible journey of grief. The movie made me long to experience what these ladies had in a trip that offered them healing & companionship from others who had had the same loss. The movie was definitely a healing experience for me. I would recommend it to any mother grieving the loss of a child of any age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Movie! January 6, 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I watched the movie last night. Wow! I have to admit I was a little scared to watch it, due to the fact that I am a mother and the mere thought of losing my son is unbearable. I could not imagine watching the journey these women went on and not feel the pain.

I was very interested in this film, so last night I took a deep breath and watched it....

Jennifer Steinman did an amazing job. It's absolutely beautiful.... The film is fantastic and the way she captured it made me able to with stand watching the unthinkable. There are moments of both pain and joy. The people and children in South Africa are a joy to listen to, and to see the strength in each of them is very moving.

I have been thinking about it all day today, which shows how much it touched me. These women are so incredibly brave and I will forever hold all of them in my thoughts and prayers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful August 9, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video
Don't be fooled by the fact that this is a documentary. This is a beautifully directed and produced look into the hearts of 6 grieving women. There is no cheesy drama scenes or terrible acting like that of a reality episode. Every emotion and tear is real and heart felt!

I cried buckets for these ladies. Am giving it to a mother who
recently lost her 13 year old. Hope it will give her some peace
of mind.
