I wanted to add a few words since I just received my micro book II today.

I'm only using Mac's. Can't speak to any issues on PC's.

I am not sure why others are having some issues....but for me it was plug and play, including Garageband. Everything works fine and imo is impressive for a bus powered interface, especially at this price point.

As a reference point I have a relatively fair idea of good sounding gear. I have Metric Halo interfaces in racks and outboard transformer based pres...And I have spent time around a lot of great analog gear in studio.

The Motu is actually quite fine sounding....surprisingly so. Not a ton of gain on the built-in pre...but still a real nice piece of kit. Without further testing I don't have much else to say as of yet, but thought it might be helpful to those reading these reviews and only seeing an issue with the phones output.

I know Motu previously addressed the GB issue here.

[...]

Not sure if either a driver change or GB version has since changed that or not. All I did was download the audio driver from Motu's site and plugged it in and everything worked fine. No need for me to create a Multi-Output Device in Apple's Audio-Midi Setup.

It sounds much better then I thought it would. And I have been trying several other interfaces around the same general price point, which frankly, were quite disappointing. This however, is a nice portable bus powered interface which won't prevent one from making very nice recordings. Along with ample routing options and balanced inputs. Rotary dials are nice and function well...If the I/O works for you...it may surprise you as well...

Use it in my home studio. Easy to use. Documentation simple and pretty easy to decipher. Like most (all?) of MOTU's audio interfaces, the MicroBook II includes Audiodesk, which I use almost exclusively now. So far, the MBII has been completely reliable and the sound quality is definitely adequate for my needs -- I use it primarily to record background tracks that I can use for practicing jazz solos.

This is NOT a plug-and-play DAC and is not meant to be used as such, but be warned.

The main problem I had with this device is that even after installing the drivers, sometimes it doesn't actually start up and the lights keep blinking. After a few times unplugging and plugging this device back in, sometimes you will be greeted by a sharp screeching noise. Not pleasant.

The volume knob also has zero tactile feedback, so which some people might like but I'm not a huge fan of. Nice thing is that the volume seems "linear" -- the volume doesn't go up sharply as you turn clockwise. The input is also very clean, I was able to record my powered guitar in without an issue.

The headphone plug is there, but does not seem to put out any power. I'm always having to connect an amp to the back to get a "full" sound.

The Microbook 2 does exactly what I need it to! The pre's sound great and I have had no problems. The Cue Mix software is a little funky, but I don't really need much out of it other than setting levels. This unit has worked flawlessly with Logic Pro X. I have not used it with any other DAW or on a windows machine, so I cannot speak for those. The price is great and the sound is fantastic. Perfect if you only need to record a couple of things at once. Here is how it sounds running my Alembic bass directly into it with vocals through a Rode NT1A: http://youtu.be/X0gHL4PCk_I

I bought this to use as an output for DJing using ableton live. I've only used it twice at this point, but it's worked flawlessly and sounded fantastic connected to my macbook pro. The box is a little larger than I had imagined, but it's not too heavy despite the metal enclosure. I've spent a little time setting up the included software; it's not as complicated as everyone says, but certainly not plug-and-play. The outputs can get very loud while maintaining a clean signal, and the headphone jack is loud enough to blow my ears out, so it's fine for club use. I haven't tested any of the inputs yet, and I'll try to update this review after I've played with it a little.
