Why is the MP3 version more expensive (not unique to M&S)

I wish someone could explain in acceptable terms why MP3 downloads are more expensive, or even anywhere near as expensive, as physical media. Yes, Amazon has to pay for the server hardware, but you know what, they already have server hardware. If MP3 albums sell for no more than $4 each they are still making a lot of money. Yes, I know an inordinate amount goes to the record company, but please, they sell for MORE than the physical media? Stop accepting the creeping sales price of MP3 downloads. And Apple is even worse ...
