Book Description

April 1, 1998
From MS to Wellness author Betty Iams masterfully shares with you her emotional roller coaster after learning she had Primary Chronic Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. She went from "stark terror" that she would become helpless like her mother, who has spent the last 30 years in a wheelchair with MS, to accepting the challenge to overcome this disease.

This tenacious, very resourceful lady brought to this challenge a metaphysical background. She believes that physical healing is as much about healing the mind and spirit as the body. Though Betty's experience is with MS, and From MS to Wellness chronicles her personal journey to Wellness, she skillfully presents a complete self-help guide to healing and transformation.

With a twinkle in her eye, and a smile in her voice, Betty calls her MS her "uninvited guest." As you follow along with her from the diagnosis through denial, anger, acceptance, and finally to developing her "game plan" for her personal journey to wellness, you realize that we all have uninvited guests as we travel along life's path. In sharing her own journey, Betty gives us a guide for handling our own inevitable uninvited guests.

* Learn how YOU can take charge of YOUR body and YOUR life.
* Learn to "listen" to your body's own intelligence. It knows what it needs to be well again.
* Discover that YOU are the healer!

From MS to Wellness is not a book about multiple sclerosis. It is about how one can create wellness. It is about healing. It teaches us that healing is about change, about changing anything in your life that you wish to change. It is about creating what you truly want in your life, whether that be creating a healthy body, a healthy relationship, the career you would like to have, or anything else you truly want in your life.

From MS to Wellness is about taking charge of your body . . . and your life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Can you imagine the stark terror you would feel if you were told you have Multiple Sclerosis? Author Betty Iams was told that, and From MS to Wellness is her story. "This book is about my journey from the diagnosis to wellness, a wellness that has as much to do with my spirit as my body", says Ms. Iams in her most intriguing and uplifting book.

Betty writes,"I was certainly not willing to accept ending up in a wheelchair, so I began my search for alternative methods of healing. The first thing I did was build a wonderful support network of marvelous friends and professionals." That, we learn, is the foundation to allowing one's body to heal itself.

From MS to Wellness describes the author's discoveries of many different healing modalities, discoveries that Betty embraced with success. And so the reader learns about Kinesiology, homeopathy, Ayurveda, Reiki, massage therapy and QiGong Tai Chi, among others. And learns that "80 percent of all disease processes will respond to feeding the body (nutrition) resting the body (reduction of stress), and moving the body (exercise).

More than anything else, though, Ms. Iams believes "You must believe that you can!" And so, From MS to Wellness is not just an autobiography, not just a book about alternative methods of healing, and not just a very well written and wonderful story. From MS to Wellness is also a very spiritual and metaphysical book of courage and insight.

While 2-1/2 million people suffer from Multiple Sclerosis, From MS to Wellness, in this reviewer's opinion, is not just for people with MS, but for all of us with any affliction, large or small. Betty says, "I do not believe there is a disease that cannot be healed." These are the words of a lightworker who has given us a must-read of intense interest and timeless value! -- Richard Fuller, Senior Editor, Metaphysical Reviews, March 20, 1998

From the Author

When I was first diagnosed, at the suggestion of a very supportive friend, I began keeping a journal. I was still "wallowing" in the mire of, "This can't be happening to me." "Why me, I have been such a good person." "What could I have done to bring this on." I was dealing with the anger - lots of anger - at God, at life, at my mother. After all, she had to have some responsibility because she had given me the MS genetic pattern that I learned had placed me in a high-risk group for developing MS. That journal helped me to first admit all these feelings, and second to learn to deal with them.

As I began to learn to look at my MS in a healthy way, I came to know that I had to take responsibility. No one was responsible for my MS. In that it was my body and my life, I had to accept responsibility, and once I did that everything changed. Then I really began my journey to wellness.

From MS to Wellness is intentionally written in a very simple easy-to-read style that anyone can relate to. The page layout is intentionally done to aid the large percentage of people with MS who have optic neuritis, frequently one of the disconcerting earliest signs of the onset of MS.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what it is built up to be, and NOT worth the price., September 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: From MS to Wellness (Paperback)
After reading about this book on the author's home page, I was looking forward to detailed information on diet and natural remedies the author has used in overcoming her MS. I was disappointed. Not only does the book not cover these important issues, but calling it a book is generous to begin with. It is in fact a small pocket-size booklet, which would only be about 40 pages if it were a standard size book. It is certainly NOT worth the money. The contents reflect more of the author's philosophy on life, and attempt to inspire the reader. If you are looking for suggestions on dealing with your MS from a nutritional point of view, try The Swank Diet or a similar work. If you want a feel good book, and don't mind shelling out the money, buy this. Frankly, there are better feel-good books that provide a lot more than this. I can't recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars An great little book!, October 1, 1998
This review is from: From MS to Wellness (Paperback)
From MS to Wellness is a perfectly wonderful guide - it's one woman's personal history generously sprinkled with the research behind her conclusions. Conclusions which she openly says are hers alone, and might not be the end all for others. Ms. Iams writes in plain, unpretentious English. Her book had great value to me as it reinforced skills and knowledge that I have, but I've needed a good nudge to keep practicing them while on my own journey with MS and a middle aged slump. Her book absolutly reminded me to strive for the best of life: both emotionally and physically. One gift I received from this little gem is a good look at myself and the conclusion that "I am OK". She reinforced that I OWN my thoughts and have two choices. One, to think negative; or two, to brighten my day with positive thoughts. Very basic. Also, her writings encouraged me to stay the course with "clean" foods, daily exercise, getting outside each day, and the importance of a daily quiet time. It's a great little handbook with perfect common sense and many rich, new thoughts. Well worth the read!
