From the Manufacturer

Decorative, ADA compliant, high profile one piece toilet. Low consumption (4.8 Lpf/1.28 Gpf) siphon jet flushing action. Tank cover, fittings, chrome plated trip lever, and SoftClose Guinevere seat included. Toto's patented, super-smooth SanaGloss glaze prevents debris, mold and bacteria from sticking to porous, ceramic surfaces. SanaGloss seals china with an ionized barrier, creating a super-smooth surface that prevents particles from adhering to ceramic, while a catalyzed ion barrier actually repels particles away. The combination of these features has yielded a ceramic finish that completely changes the foundation of conventional glazing. Look for SanaGloss on a wide range of Toto's toilets and lavatories. Like a cyclone in nature, the Double Cyclone flushing system harnesses the power of water and gravity to create a more powerful 1.28 GPF that maximizes cleaning action. Double Cyclone features: Two nozzles (instead of rim holes) use water more efficiently for a better rim and bowl wash and result in less trapped dirt and bacteria and less cleaning. The dual-nozzle water propulsion system allows more water to be directed to the siphon for a more powerful flush. This toilet complies with ADA regulations for height. Toto's SoftClose seat is the latest in innovative smart seat technology with Comfortable Ergonomic Design, Molded Bumpers, and High Gloss Polypropylene. (Resistant to Chemicals and Cleaning Agents.) Constructed of solid, high-impact plastic, this unique seat is specifically designed to reduce injury and to eliminate annoying "Toilet Seat Slam". The seat and lid utilize a built-in SoftClose hinge system, which lowers the seat down to the bowl gently and quietly. The engineering of SoftClose incorporates Toto's high standard of quality and consumer ease. Top tightening mounting bolts ensure easy installation. And of course, all seats are precision designed to fit regular or elongated bowls

We bought two of the Guinevere's in June 2012. From the beginning, they were great. They looked good and had no issues. But, about two months later, both toilets had issues with the water level draining and making terrible noises. We even have had to turn off the water at night, so that the noises don't wake up anybody in the house. Our first call to Toto customer service and they sent out replacement flappers. They were basically the same part, so it was no suprise to get the same result. Second call to Toto and now, we have to troubleshoot where the water is leaking. I asked for replacement flush valve/gasket, but they are unwilling to send until more troubleshooting is done. We've had a plumber out and have also talked to a couple of distributors and they have informed us that it is probably the valve/gasket. There seems to be quite a bit of industry knowledge on these issues, but maybe it hasn't reached the Toto corpoation yet. If I were to replace toilets again, I would save the money and buy a different brand.

My sister raved about her Toto Ultramax so I opted for the Toto Guinevere for a more traditional look.

PROS
- Soft close lid - no more banging from closing the lid.
- 1.28 GAL flush - water efficient. Tank fills up very quickly. However, now that there is minimal water in the bowel, it may require multiple flushes to remove heavy waste that at times can stick to the bowel.
- Skirted bowl makes cleaning easier and improves the appearance of the bowel.

CONS
- Drip, drip sound in between flushes - I read on the web that this is due to the auto-balancing mechanism. Supposedly all toilets do this. However, there is no sound insulation in the pipe for this particular Toto model. Thus, I can hear it dripping in between flushes. I called Toto and they sent the replacement part. I am still debating whether to hire a plumber to take out the toilet to replace the pipe.

It is very disappointing that such an expensive toilet would have this drip drip issue. Had I known about it, I would have gone with another model.

ADDED: Shortly after writing the review, I received the kit--a couple of plastic washers--installed them per direction, and THE FIX WORKS. The leakage has stopped. I would give their customer support five stars, but I don't think I'll change the overall rating because I still feel the fix should have been pre-installed--and I still think the design is flawed.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

The flushing mechanism--handle, lever, and float/flap--have an obvious design flaw that would seem to be easily correctible. The flaw shows up in two ways.

First is what I would call an "undocumented variable-sized flush."

One would expect a well-engineered 1.28-gallon flush toilet to flush the same way every time. One would expect it to deliver about 1.28 gallons more or less no matter how you pull the handle. Not so. A quick flip delivers a small flush, holding it up for a count of about three delivers a large one. I gave it the quick flip and was constantly annoyed with bowl-emptying failures with solid waste. (Do I make myself clear? :) ) My wife discovered and showed me the "hold for a little while" technique and I haven't had that problem since.

Problem #2 is serious: flap leakage, and water continuing to run after the flush is complete. On our toilet, the sound of the leak is such a subtle, soft, background hiss that I didn't recognize it for a long time--this will sound stupid but I thought it was breeze in the trees outside our bathroom window. But it's not a slow leak. If I shut off the water the leak empties the tank in about 20-30 minutes. In other words, a leak of several gallons an hour! Not what you want in a "low-flush" toilet!

The reason is obvious. The flush lever is about 1-1/2 inches off-center with regard to the float-and-flap.

We bought two Toto Guinevere toilets, to replace both of our old toilets, which dated to the mid-70's. I didn't want to buy Japanese toilets, but we were assured that this is the only one Made in USA and that Toto is absolutely the best. We wanted the best, so we took the plunge (ahem). We could've bought 3 or 4 cheap toilets for each bathroom at this price, and judging by the superior performance of other peoples cheap toilets we'd be better off.

Flushing was pathetic as we received the toilets. The only way it's now offered is the 1.28-gallon-per-flush model. It took 2 or 3 flushes for even liquid waste to be visibly removed from the bowl. Saving the planet? Maybe not. I went looking for the 1.6-gallon flush valve, and learned that all it takes is the Toto BLUE flapper valve. That worked like magic - the blue flapper stays open longer and allows a full flush. They now flush very well.

They have the Sani-Gloss premium finish. Another Toto joke. You can't use cleaners like in a regular toilet - just mild soap. Scum and pink mold build up and all I can do is scrub every few days with a brush and soap. Worse than that, these toilets get the worst skid marks I've ever seen in a toilet. After a solid-waste use, you need to wait 5-10 minutes and come back to re-flush, or be embarrassed when someone else uses the toilet later. Since we see this even with guests, I don't think it's our family's diet.

Also on the embarrassing front... Whenever anyone urinates while sitting, the shape of the bowl causes urine to splash up onto the underside of the seat. Something else to clean a time or two per day.
