I needed a laptop that met some strict criteria. 15" screen, 1080x1920 resolution, and dual hard drives. Not an easy order to fill! So I took a look and MSI is the only company that makes such a laptop. Low and behold, they also still sell Whitebook versions of the laptops! This specific platform is a great base to begin the barebones laptop build.

If you take a look at the prebuilt MSI systems, most include a 1.5TB combo of 2 750GB rotational drives, 16gb of RAM, and a 2.2GHz I7. This whitebook allows the customer to nix the rotational drives for some SSDs and keep the cost about the same. So that's exactly what I did. I used 2 Mushkin 240GB SATA 6gb/s SSDs, 16gb of Corsair RAM, and a 2.2GHz I7. Installed Windows 7 Professional and the end result was a system that hit 7.9 on a Windows Experience Index on all categories but video performance; 7.4 and 7.3 in the two categories. All of this was built for about $1800 which is around the same cost of the 1.5TB version from MSI. Drivers are available, the BIOS support worries me however, MSI states no guaranty to the BIOS from a retail version to the Whitebook version so I stayed away.

So here's my -2 stars: The system arrived, I built the pieces, and when I hit the power button, the laptop wouldn't turn on. Sent a message to HPP Enterprises (The selling company) and MSI questioning the problem. HPP advised me to return it for a new one but it was friday by the time I built it so I was stuck over the weekend anyway. MSI failed to reply after two weeks. But, as I stated, the laptop is running: use your favorite search engine to diagnose the issue and you will find that the gaming series from MSI hates booting without a power cord. So I turned the laptop on, let the battery run for about 2 hours and plugged it into AC power.
