I just want to say that I'm the kind of person that spends a lot of time reading other people's reviews, but rarely shares their own opinion. I have only ever written three reviews in my life, one was for the worst hostel I've ever stayed at - and one was for the best I've ever stayed at. This one is about my laptop.
This is a fantastic piece of art.
It is incredibly powerful and can play practically all games and carry out the day to day activities. One problem I've found with a lot of Windows 7/Vista computers is that even though the hardware set up seems powerful because the Operating Systems take so much processing power they can actually be very slow. This is not the case with the MSI FX420. It is fast, smooth and powerful.
Its keyboard is designed in such a way that small pieces of dirt or particulates cannot fall through into areas unreachable meaning you can keep your laptop very clean. Most laptops tend to have tiny gaps everywhere that just accumulate dirt over time. This is not the case here, and as I look at my keyboard now... give me a moment...I see nowhere that I cannot reach to clean.
The keys are smaller than some laptops, but they're firm and they give a definitive sense of satisfaction when typing which some products like Apple do not. It has several important buttons for controlling key functions at the top of the laptop, and a good touchpad. One minor problem is that because it's a relatively compact laptop you can sometimes accidently touch the touchpad when you're typing a lot - however they've solved it by placing a physical touchpad lock button right by the top of it which stops this from happening when activated.
The design is sleek, with a a nice finish.
The screen is just bedazzling. It's vibrant and full of life and changing the brightness takes mere seconds. Sometimes I find myself just watching the sceneic backgrounds when I'm working it's that good. The battery life is reasonably long although I usually keep it powered in.
Now the downsides.
The sound doesn't go to as high a volume as I'd like. I would much prefer it to get much louder and it can't reach levels of volume as high as I would like.
Although you can de-activate the touchpad for doing long stretches of typing, if you're typing and editing where you need to move the mouse and click it isn't a feasible option and it can be annoying - although you do soon get used to be being more careful.
The in-built webcam and microphone are quite bad. They're a definite step down from most laptops, the webcam is around 1.4MP and I'm told the microphone can be a little hazy.
Conclusion
Great laptop. Those things I've pointed out are minor considering the overall performance. If I want louder music, I plug my headphones in or use my desktop which has bass speakers anyway. The touchpad issue is a little annoying, but a minor annoyance at best. The inbuilt webcam being so poor in quality can be irritating, I would have much preferred a better one - but then considering my last laptop was a piece of crap HP computer which didn't run half as fast as its specifications purported it would I'm not too annoyed.
This is sleek, very fast, vibrant and reliable. I've installed Linux Ubuntu with no problems whatsoever in partitioning the hard drive. The laptop doesn't even get that hot, most laptops get incredibly hot, and this still does obviously get quite hot - but I've had much, much hotter.
I feel like I want you to buy this laptop because there are so many inferior alternatives you could end up buying for a greater price. Recommended strongly.
