What Other Items Do Customers Buy After Viewing This Item?
Sorry for a Lengthy review, I just wanted to share everything with everyone out there who wants to buy this PerfoMonster (Performance Monster :) ).
I had bought the customize version of this laptop. My laptop has Core i7 4700MQ rather than 4800MQ. I’ve explained the reason of customization below. I am writing this review after 2 weeks of usage. Before this I was using two laptops HP Pavilion dv4t (Core 2 Duo, 14’’) and HP Pro Book (Core i5, 15.6’’) with Crucial SSD as primary hard disk. I am a PhD student in networking field and I’ve to run applications that demands higher performance other than gaming e.g. running multiple virtual machines, formal theory solvers, etc. and above all Microsoft Office . Also, I love playing games and HD media streaming a lot connecting to my 3D HDTV. In this review I’ll write about every aspect of this laptop that I’ve tested and experienced. I am not a professional reviewer, so, this is just an end-user sharing his experience.
Why 4700MQ and not 4800MQ
According to performance comparisons, 4800MQ is almost 10-15% better than 4700MQ with a price difference of just 125-150$. My budget was low so I used this money to buy Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB SSD for 130$. And, anyone who is buying this laptop and not considering upgrading with SSD will stay a loser (sorry for harsh wording). You can only unleash the real potential of this perfomonster through an SSD upgrade. But, don’t buy it from any seller but upgrade it yourself, it is much cheaper and better.
Dimensions and Weight
I could never guess the actual size and dimension feeling from just reading the dimension and weight specifications. In dimension it is just like HP Pro book (15.Read more ›

*4800MQ and GTX870M version is extremely fast. *Has all the bells and whistles: very nice screen, fast wireless card, 7200rpm hard drive, and the speakers sound really good for a laptop. *Plays Battlefield 4 on high settings (haven't tried AA) without any hiccups. *Keyboard does not get hot while gaming.
Cons:
Cooling seems sub-par. During an hour of Battlefield 4 with CPUID running I saw max temps of 98-100 degrees C on the CPU and GPU. Seems really high for my liking and that is with my Notepal X3 on high. I will have to replace the thermal paste and check the heatsinks to make sure they are seated correctly. But buyers beware that you may have to do the same if mine is not just a dud. I bought the 8gb RAM version and it only has one stick of ram as opposed the two for dual channel. It makes it easier to upgrade to 16gb later but for now I am stuck with single channel memory. Not a huge deal but worth mentioning.
Overall:
I am very pleased with this laptop and once I get the heat issue resolved it will be perfect. I was very surprised by how nice the screen is; no dead pixels, the colors are very rich and it has a pretty good viewing angle too. I am not sure if it is mentioned in the description but it has two HDD bays, so it was fairly easy to add an SSD. The keyboard on it is not bad with the exception of the right shift key that is not full size which makes typing take a little getting used to. I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone who wants a relatively inexpensive gaming laptop with great specs.

I have had my 424 for a few weeks now and haven't found any major gripes about it. The CPU/GPU combo are the center point of this machine. I will be adding an SSD to it soon, which will increase the overall performance even more. The OEM 7200RPM drive that it comes with is decent enough that an SSD isn't absolutely necessary. The screen is fantastic with vibrant colors and depth.
The backlit keyboard. Complete eye candy, but one of those things that I want on every laptop that I buy from now on.
A word on the speakers : AMAZING. I've had/used/worked on hundreds of laptops over the years, and this has the best speakers, hands down, of any that I've ever heard.
Noise. It's quiet, even when I was running Diablo 3 at full 1080P. There's a "turn your laptop into a freaking jet plane" button along the top bezel that spins the main fan up to like 5000RPM, and it's LOUD, but... 5000RPM. During normal usage it is next to silent.
A huge pro to me, is the power, HDMI, are on the back of the laptop.

Even though times are lean, I figure a decent computer is nowadays more necessary than a car. This has high end components and should be quite future-proof. It whizzes through all games at very high to ultra settings at full resolution. I've tried it with Crysis 3 first at ultra. Gameplay was smooth due to G-sync though frame rates were a tad low. I optimized using GeForce Experience which dropped settings down a notch to very high and frame rates stay consistently above 45, 50 most of the time. Batman Arkham Origins stays around 60 at ultra. No buggy drops in frame rates but Steam has updated it a few times since Fida's review. The 4th Generation 4800 processor is quite powerful and with its strong gpu any engineer's CAD application is a breeze. It makes a powerful yet affordable workstation. I originally planned on the Asus ROG with 860 gpu because of their cooling system and some supposed cooling issues with MSI. Yet the specs on this machine were much higher for just 50 bucks more. I'm happy to report that this machine stays cool with cpu running in the 50'sC at heavy load according to Core Temp and the fan exhaust at no time seems uncomfortably hot. No spot on the keyboard or top ever gets really noticeably warm and I barely notice when the fan is running. It's comparable cooling-wise to my old Asus ROG, so MSI solved its cooling issues. Windows 8.1 is a bit cell phony but I downloaded the free StartIsBack and it goes right to the desktop with the start button like in Windows 7. Later this summer Microsoft is putting out an update which will restore this proper. I plan to ssd it but it's superfast even with a mechanical hard drive. You can't go wrong. Best bang for your buck!
