I've owned dozens of videocards since the early 90's, and this is without question the most impressive bit of engineering I've seen on a GPU. The heatsink is simply a work of art. It is solid with no creaking or bending and absolutely stiff thanks to the midplane and back plates. Looking at every aspect of the design I can find nothing to improve upon.

Even for a high-end heatsink this is large. It replaced a 6990 and the lengths are almost identical but the width and height of the Lightning are significantly greater and it is almost ridiculously heavy. It is a mammoth heatsink, which is what it takes to cool the 290x chip on air, and do so very quietly.

At idle it is effectively silent as I can not hear it over the barely audible 200mm case fans. In most games it spins up and is still quieter than the 140mm fans I use to direct the case intake air straight to the videocard. It is only under a heavy load (Crysis with AA, BF4 with 150% res scale, most newer titles with 4xAA) that the Lightning's fans can be heard at all, and even then it is a fairly low pitched fan sound and only slightly heard over my case's fans with the fan controller set to medium. The 6990 sounded like a hair dryer, and even at idle was plainly heard from the next room. One of the main reasons I upgraded (besides ~50% more performance) was that I couldn't stand the noise any longer. I knew the Lightning would be significantly quieter, but I wasn't expecting just how quiet it turned out to be. Generally inaudible and even under a bench load it is still one of the quietest recent videocards I've owned.

The chip I got is only average overclock wise. It'll do 1200/6400 but starts to artifact when benched, though is fine for gaming.

The card is amazing, I got unlucky and had a faulty card but what I did get to see was impressive. Got a nice refund though.
