CPU Socket Type
The socket type is the kind of connection used to mount the CPU to the motherboard. Intel and AMD each make their own types of sockets. You will want to make sure your new motherboard socket type matches that of your chosen CPU.

Motherboard Size
Motherboards come in a variety of sizes for different applications. You will want to make sure your computer case is designed to hold the size of motherboard you buy. Smaller motherboards have less connections for components, but are useful when you need a PC that won't take up a lot of space.

Number of SATA Connections
The number of SATA connections on your motherboard will determine how many mass storage devices and optical drives you can install in your computer. You will want one connection for each hard drive, solid state drive, and CD/DVD/Blu-ray drive you plan to use.
Everything worked fine except for network controller. Turned off in BIOS and bought a network card and has been working great. Never got response from MSI which was really disappointing. Is it too much to ask for quality these days?

I built a new PC about 2 months ago and have been running it since. It works great. I have an Intel core i7-4770K CPU, 16 GB of DDR3 1600 memory (Crucial Ballistix Sport), 3 x 1 TB hard drives in a RAID 5 configuration, a 64 GB SSD configured as a cache for the RAID disk (the RAID and SSD cache are all features built into the motherboard, and work great). I am using the on-board graphics capabilities, no graphics card plugged into the PCI-e 3.0 x 16 slot. The built in graphics "card" is more than adequate for my applications (keep in mind that the CPU is also the GPU and a different CPU/GPU will give different results).
I have not tried to overclock the CPU or memory. I am using the retail box fan and it seems more than adequate for my setup. I might need to upgrade the cooling system if I were to overclock the CPU. I am running around 45 C for the CPU temperature on average.
The UEFI (formerly BIOS) interface is graphical and fairly easy to navigate.
The built in network interface works fine. Everything I have tried works as advertised with the possible exception of adding more disks to my RAID setup, I haven't figured out how to do that.
I like that it has 6 SATA III (6 Gb/s) connectors. Their location and orientation could have been more convenient but it's not any worse than any other MoBo I have experience with. I may not be typical, but 6 SATA connections is not enough for me. So I added a PCI card, problem solved.
I have a PCI TV tuner card and a Blu-Ray disk. I use the PC as a HTPC in addition to more serious duty. I have connected my HDTV to the graphics output via the HDMI port. This works much better than my previous PC which also used an HDMI port for graphics.Read more ›

This motherboard is a great budget board..... You have the highest end chipset of the 4th generation and a good amount of bells and whistles. CLICK BIOS 4 was a little hard to nav through, but very nice bios. The integrated sound card will do you well, as you can hook up a 7.1 system which is awesome! MSI Live Update 6 definitely helps you install ALL of the drivers you need, so download that first thing. Creative Sound Blaster Cinema is simply amazing as 3D Surround works well, bass boost is very clean, and crystallizer makes everything sound awesome. MSI Command Center lets you OC, control fans, and much more. Now to installing everything on it. I had no problems EXCEPT getting the USB 3.0 header in. Its a little bit of a tight fit and it came loose only once, but other than that, absolutely no problems. Great motherboard for budget builds. This is my total build, which is about $830

This Motherboard is perfectly acceptable. I haven't had any major issues with it. The only things that irked me are things that I either didn't check on, or didn't initially think would be an issue.
In case it helps some other people, the three things that irked me were the number of USB ports, the sound output, and the lack of SLI support.
USB- This was just a laxity of research on my part. I came from a motherboard that had more USB slots, and it didnt even occur to me to check how many this had.
Sound- Again, Lax research, but the motherboard I used to have for my AMD rig had surround sound output, and I didnt even think to check on that for this one. This meant I had to get a sound card in order to use my logitech surrond sound system.
SLI support- I didnt think I would need it at the time, but now I look at my PC and think that I should have left myself the option of getting a second video card and using SLI.
