I've had our U100 for about two months. I love it! It has the perfect screen size for my tired eyes (the white keys help with that, too). The way I use my computers, having both a wireless and a wired ethernet capability is a feature I appreciate. The hard drive is plenty large enough for me. The camera is great, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvellous little machine!, January 21, 2009
This review is from: MSI Wind U100-439US 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom Processor, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 3 Cell Battery) White (Personal Computers)

Soon after buying mine, I did do some remedial upgrades. I got a good quality Bluetooth dongle, added another gigabyte of memory, and a nine cell battery that gives it more than six hours of useful computing time. These upgrades cost about $100 in total. I hasten to point out, the upgrades weren't essential, they just made a good thing even better for my situation.

My spouse used the webcam to talk with her family overseas using Google talk; she said it was just like being there. Her happiness by itself totally justified the purchase!

The MSI Wind series has an enthusiastic following of computer hobbyists. They have discovered many ways of enhancing the U100 for everyday use. Because of this following, I don't think the Winds will soon join the ranks of orphaned hardware.

For those unfamiliar with the MSI name, I've bought their system components for years and always have been pleased with their quality and the way that MSI provides continuing support.

When I upgraded the memory, I carefully checked the internal components and the craftsmanship. I was impressed by both. Lots of name brand sub-components and everything carefully and thoughtfully laid out.

If all my purchases made me as happy as this one, I would indeed be a happy camper.

5.0 out of 5 stars And The Top Netbook is..., December 19, 2008

I didn't purchase this netbook for me, its a gift for my sister.

But, I really wanted to take it for a test drive, so I took it out of the box, and booted it for the first time. No problems there of course, and once XP booted, it ran great! IE was a little slow, so I downloaded google chrome, and the browsing is FLAWLESS!!! The hour I spent on it was a breeze and I now know why they call it the "MSI WIND."

I bought the extra 1GB of Ram advertised on the page, and hope to get that in before we give it to her on X-Mas.... which will make it even more impressive!

I researched the Lenovo S10, the Asus EEE, didn't waste my time on the Acer Aspire. I found that the MSI Wind was probably the best bet, and I think it is!

The keyboard is bigger than the Lenovo S10. The MSI Wind screen is 10.2" which is far superior to the 8.9" of other netbooks!

The ONLY con I found is the "PERIOD, Right Arrow" key is shrunk a bit, and I had to backspace a few times, but got used to it after the 2nd or 3rd time I hit the slash key.

Overall, definately a bargain at $350, and I'm going to look into purchasing a black MSI Wind for myself after the new year!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great computer for a child, January 7, 2009

I bought this for my stepdaughter as her handed down, handed down, laptop finally stopped working.

It looked good in the reviews and it is exactly what she needed. She surfs the web and does her homework on it and for that it is perfect with one caveat: Most sites are displayed just fine on the screen except for the Webkinz site which is too big for the screen. Scrolling is such a chore, I guess. That is her only complaint about the computer.

She loves that it is so light and the sound is good enough and loud enough that she doesn't complain. She caries it from room to room and the battery seems to last forever.

Granted, it doesn't have a CD drive, but we downloaded the programs she uses off the web. All the usual programs, OpenOffice, Firefox, free AVG, all work fine and the computer doesn't seem to be bogged down to any appreciable degree.

I truly have to commend MSI for building a wonderful netbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Far, So Good - Mid-level Netbook, December 19, 2008
This review is from: MSI Wind U100-439US 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom Processor, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 3 Cell Battery) White (Personal Computers)
My wife is getting used to e-mail and wanted a PC for the kitchen that doesn't take up much space so I began looking for a Netbook PC that would meet the needs. I was aware of the $300 Asus EEEPC sporting the Linux OS, but decided I would rather have XP just because of the familiarity of the software.

Price was a major determining factor for us right now, and at the Dec 2008 Amazon price of $350 for a 10" model, the MSI Wind U100 is a great deal. I've heard rumors of the U120 coming out in January, but I take consolation that it probably won't be this cheap, at least not for some months to come!

I haven't used it too much yet as it won't get broken in until after Christmas, but in my setup and trial it seems to perform pretty well. I touch type, so wanted a larger keyboard than found on the 9" screens. Also, I tried out two different ASUS models and an HP Netbook at a local store. I didn't care much for the ASUS keyboards, but the HP keyboard felt really good. However, the HP is running around $100 more and has only a 60G hard disk.

Since we will have the unit plugged in most of the time, the 2 hour battery life is not as big of a concern for us. I haven't yet upgraded the RAM to 2G. If you do this, I've heard you should get permission from MSI before upgrading because breaking the seal on the bottom voids your warranty. The actual installation, though, is reportedly very easy (just plug it into the memory slot).

I would have liked to have tried the Lenovo S10 as a I use a Lenovo X60 at work and like their build quality, but the lower price, free shipping and good reviews of the MSI Wind sold me!

The MSI Wind netbook was my choice for a portable, feature-rich yet compact laptop for my sister. It has most if not all standard and extra features you'd expect from a modern-day netbook, decent size keyboard, low power consumption (also meaning you won't get burned while holding the laptop), and a relatively large screen give the overall dimensions of the computer. Sister just loves it, as it perfectly fits her needs as a lightweight, network-aware but powerful enough laptop to use throughout the day, while on the move. And the appearance is nice and fluffy for a girl :-)

i had the acer aspire one, and then i saw this one. so returned it and it was the best decision i ever made! the screen is alot more crisp, and the form factor is a 100 times nicer. i was able to upgrade the ram to 2gb and overclock the cpu to 2ghz. and with a 250gb hard drive upgrade, got plenty of space for my stuff. totally recommend this laptop

You can just grab it with 3 fingers, pop it into any ol bag and go anywhere and work with it. Yes, the screen is small, but that is the price to pay for flexibility. I wandered all over London during a flight layover of 8 hrs with this in a backpack and many other things. That would never have happened with any other laptop.
I'm having so much fun with this, that the only issue is battery life. The 2 hours is just not enough, and I don't feel like carrying the charger around. So now I have to figure out how to solve that problem. I might put Linux on it, which would not be such a hog.

So far we are very happy with the purchase. As with most other reviews this is a basic notebook with not much extra, but the included webcam makes Skype calls more fun and very easy - the main reason for this particular notebook selection.

One thing that drove us crazy, is the quick start manual that does not tell you how to turn on the wifi (FN + F11). Had to go to the web site and download their manual for that info as well as other switches.

Also, the touchpad is very sensitive and fast on their shipped setting. We have played with slowing it down but it still seems a little too quick.

Will add other comments later as we put more "miles" on this baby.

Update Nov 2010 : Still happy! In general all is well but knowing Windows 7 spoils you. XP is looking a bit outdated.

My wife and I bought this for our niece who is 11. It is her first computer and the small size of the Wind is perfect for her hands. The machine is very capable and lets her browse the Web, listen to music, play games, and do her homework on it with no problems. The screen is bright and the sound surprisingly beefy. She loves it. If you have larger hands such as I do, you will not be able to touch type on a laptop of this size. But for portability or modest computing requirements, this is a great buy.

I'm enjoying using the u-100 for all my computing since it arrived.
I increased the RAM to 2 GIG but even before that it ran quite well and the LED backlit screen is an entirely new experience far superior on my eyes to my previous 17" HP DV9700.

I bought a small Samsung external DVD writer anf the whole thing is so easy to carry it is an entirely new experience in portable eqipment.

My only caveat would be that it might not be useful if you are REALLY processor intensive like major video editing or such. for what many people do however the current core2duo processors are far beyond the actual need (except for running resource hog software like Windows Vista).
