Great Netbook with Surprising Battery Life, January 7, 2010
This review is from: MSI Wind U110-031US 10.1-Inch Silver Netbook - Over 14 Hours of Battery Life (Personal Computers)
I got this netbook for my grandmother, and after seeing how amazing it is, I ordered one for myself. The battery life truly is over 14 hours of normal internet-browsing usage, which is just shocking! The keyboard doesn't feel too cramped (except the fact that the [.], [,], and [/] buttons are a bit thinner than the rest, which can be a pain for a developer), and the indicator lights are well-placed.
It comes with Windows XP, but I'll soon be replacing it with Windows 7 on mine, because I don't like running ten-year-old operating systems. Out of the box, though, it handles streaming music from Lala, video from Hulu, and medium-to-heavy internet usage all just fine.
Having the card reader is nice, and with the 160GB hard drive, you've got room to store your photos when you empty your card to shoot more. The power cord plugs into the left of the machine, and the headphone jack is on the right. There are three USB ports between the left and right sides. Overall, it feels very balanced, I like the port setup.
My grandmother got hers on sale for $299 at Newegg, but by the time I realized I wanted one too, it was back up to $399. I came to Amazon, and they met me in the middle, around $350.
RAM could use an upgrade if you plan on being a super-heavy user, but it works fine for me having music playing, 10-15 internet tabs open (I use Google Chrome), and running Aptana Studio (which is Java-based, so it's a 'heavy' application) with the stock 1GB.
UPDATE: I've been asked about its screen, so I'll add this bit. It's got a matte screen, so it works really well in all sorts of situations - the brightness goes high enough for direct sunlight, even! I personally hate glossy, so I'm glad it's matte.

Not the best netbook out there..., February 22, 2010
This review is from: MSI Wind U110-031US 10.1-Inch Silver Netbook - Over 14 Hours of Battery Life (Personal Computers)
While I had high opinions of this netbook when I first received it, I was left pretty dissapointed. I will say that the battery life is predtty much as good as it states, but you have to constantly put on the battey saver option everytime you open the netbook. This is the only reason why I gave this 2 stars. For the cons, I wazs not impressed that in order to upgrade to 2 GB RAM, you have to break the warranty seal, so in essence it's not really worth it. Speaking of warranty, their service is awful! The battery is very heavy and the clips that hold it to the computer are very very flimsy, and broke within 2 weeks of me getting the computer so the battery wouldnt stay in. When I called for warranty info, I was told after waiting for 2 hours on hold, and then leaving a message, and having some guy that couldn't even speak english call me back 6 hours later, that I would have to send it to their repair depot, at my expense, and they required insurance (total cost to ship it would have been over $40) and then it would take 3 to 10 weeks to repair and have it sent back, again at my expense. I was very happy and lucky that these issues came up within the 30 days for me to return it to amazon. Overall, I would pass on this computer and pick one that has a better reputation and durability.

All around, very pleased and easy to upgrade Ram, February 13, 2010
This review is from: MSI Wind U110-031US 10.1-Inch Silver Netbook - Over 14 Hours of Battery Life (Personal Computers)
I've had this Netbook for about a month now and am very pleased with it.
I like the other reviewer ordered 1 GB of Ram thinking there was an empty slot.
But that was MY MISTAKE and nowhere in MSI's technical data does it say there is an empty slot. It has 1 slot with 1 GB installed.
I RMA'd the stick and ordered a 2 GB stick and swapped it in with no problem, I also had no problem getting a hold of an MSI rep. He told me the models are different and the U100 has 1 GB soldered in and an empty slot
The U120 is like mine and the U123 has onboard with no slot, so do your research before you start complaining.
I also downloaded the newest GMA500 driver from Intel download center.
Actually it was good right out of the box and there's no real reason to upgrade anything with Windows XP
I was thinking I might change to Windows 7 one of these days.
