I bought MSR Gear Shed for my MSR Hubba solo tent. I needed a shelter for my large rucksack and for my wet gear during long hikes (5 days or more). I was pleased of what I bought.

The lack of apsis has been a problem with the Hubba series. But now you get a good vestibule to store away the stuff you cannot or will not put in the sleeping compartment - which is very good, since with the single-man Hubba there really is only very little extra room. No more cramming dry clothes under your sleeping mat! Also, during rain and storm you get more room to maneuver inside and organize your valuables without getting wet. There is just enough room for an average-sized person to move around or sit down with your hands full.

I was worried if the product works well with a solo tent. But there was no problem whatsoever. The shed can be attached to a single-man tent (Hubba or Hubba HP) easily. If used properly it won't bend the tent sideways - actually, it makes the tent more taut. Add-on fits also perfectly to the tent fly, leaving no aperture for the rain and wind. So during rain it won't leak water inside.

The gear Shed has only partial floor, with most of the fly-covered area left open ground. Some people see this as a problem. I however saw it as an two-way advantage. First this reduces the overall weight and size of the product. Secondly it helps to store away wet and soiled gear - you don't have to put your muddy boots or soaked rucksack on the canvas at all.

The only problem with the product, in my opinion, was the relative weight (800 gr. or so). This makes my lightweigt Hubba 40% heavier than before. But I'm willing to trade some weight for a lot of extra comfort in areas where there are no man-made shelters around.

I was pleased with the overall quality of the workmanship and the materials.

I have the Huba (1-person) tent, but wanted to bring my dog backpacking. This extension is absolutely perfect. It has plenty of room for my black lab (65 lbs.) to move around and sleep, while still having plenty of room for my rucksack. I can't speak for the Huba Huba, but for the solo tent this is an excellent addition if you carry a lot of gear (more than a couple of nights) and/or bring a medium or large dog with you. The only thing to keep in mind is that this (packed) takes up almost as much room and weight as the Huba tent itself, so you are almost doubling your load tentwise.

I did not think I would like this gear shed as much as I do. It adds an extra pound to my pack, but it is great to have, especially on rainy days (we have a lot of these in the Great Smoky Mountains). It is really nice to have a place to keep your pack and boots when it is raining. If you have two people in the tent it gives you a lot of extra room. The only drawback I see is it only has a partial floor, but I carry a piece of plastic to cover that area and have never had a problem. If you do have two people sharing the tent the extra weight is no problem since you are splitting the gear anyway. I love my Hubba Hubba tent (I am on my second one now...had one of the original dark orange ones). I looked at all of the new tents on the market (the new ultra light ones) when replacing my old one. I could not find one that I liked better than my Hubba Hubba. I do like the new green color as it is less obtrusive to others.
One comment on Cascade Designs, the company that brings us the MSR and Therm-a-Rest gear. Not only do they provide great gear, they stand behind it and have one of the best customer support departments I have ever dealt with. If you purchase their gear you will not be disappointed.

My girlfriend and I recently used the Gear Shed on her Hubba Hubba while camping in the Nevada high desert for a week. It served as our climbing base-camp and gave us some additional space to keep our duffell bags out of the elements.

We found it more important than ever to set the tent up with the weather in mind. Because the Shed requires you to simply fold the existing fly under itself, there is a potential gap where wind and rain could enter (albiet very small and facing downward). This would not be an issue in your typical rainstorm but if you expect to see gusts in excess of 50mph, you may want to consider losing the shed.

It also requires you to stake it in 4 places which you will need stakes for. Fortunately it comes with 1 guy line which you will need to use to keep the Shed upright.

Overall I give it 4 stars. Its pretty pricy to add space to your tent, and since it uses another pole, it adds some considerable weight if you are trying to backpack with it. A bigger tent in the first place could solve some of your space needs. Overall a very cool addition to your camping arsenal.
