5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful November 2, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I purchased this book to help me study for the so dreaded MTEL math subtest. I haven't done any math for almost 20 years, I also have never been good at it in high school. This book has been so helpful!!! It's very well organized into chapters. Each chapter has about 5 to 6 lessons. The lessons are short and contain only what you need to do the exercises. Then Each lesson has a 10 question quiz with detailed answers. The chapter ends with a 20 question quiz that covers all the lessons studied in the chapter along with the detailed answers. At the end of the book you have 2 full length exams with answers of course and a glossary. The book has also a detailed lesson on how to do the open response.
The bonus that you will rarely find with any other author of a study book is that whenever you have a question about the book, you can email Mary DeSouza. Not only does she answer questions, but she also gives encouragements and support. She is fantastic!!!
The book is excellent and the price is more than reasonable! Very glad I bought it!
A little update:
I passed the test with an over 240 score!!! Next adventure: The multi subject test! I also recommend that you check math websites. They are great! A lot of them are free and very helpful. Good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars math mastered! November 12, 2012
Format:Paperback
The last math course I took was 35 years ago and I had to hire a tutor to pass it! So you can imagine my fear of having to take the dreaded Math MTEL exam. However I passed the Math MTEL the first time I took it and AALLLL the credit goes to Mary. She was my MTEL angel! Without her I'm convinced I could never have passed this test. With her help I relearned the equivalent of 10 years worth of Math classes in about one month!! Her book and her online class focused like a laser beam on teaching the topics which were on the exam so I didn't waste time learning about topics I didn't need in order to pass. I emailed her about concepts I could not understand on my own and she responded promptly with detailed and clear explanations. Her books or her online courses are all anyone needs to pass their MTELs. But, first and foremost to me, her level of professionalism and attention to her students is virtually unprecedented and unequaled, anywhere! P.S. She also successfully guided me through passing my Literacy and Communications MTELS in less than two weeks!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I did the course and passed the test! January 28, 2012
Format:Paperback
Mary DeSouza has a basic, start at the beginning, approach for this course. I liked it since it had been years and years since I took math. Every topic has 4-5 sections. Each section has a test (which you can re-take if you are struggling). Each topic has a test. So, you build on your knowledge.

The math test I took had an essay question on right triangles, areas and the Pythagorean theory. Eeegads! But I had it nailed down because it was in this program.

Like every course - you get what you give. If you are motivated and want to pass the test, you can use this as a tool. It helped me. I failed the first time, took the course and then passed the second time up.

The most helpful tool for me was the "assessment test" which I saw that I did very poorly on areas and measurement. So I went back and studied that section. And, sure enough, it was on the MTEL!

Good luck to you all. I liked the material and found it very helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars great resource July 9, 2009
Format:Paperback
Purchase this book, practice like mad, study hard, and you might pass the MTEL math subtest on the first time like I did. This book was invaluable and the price is right. Good luck!

The structure of this book is very good. By that I mean the problems are given, followed by a detailed explanation of the answer. The problem is that there are many ridiculous mistakes, such as 1 kilometer = 1.61 miles. Page 151 is missing a graph ("in the graph above", but there is no "graph above"). The font can be incredibly confusing for fractions; 1103/124 is really 1 103/124 (the font size doesn't change, so it appears exactly as I have typed it here). There are transposing mistakes where the number is copied incorrectly. Because of these errors, 3 stars is actually pretty generous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Find October 19, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book saved my career as a teacher in Massachusetts. I am really thankful that I purchased it and I highly recommend it to anyone that needs to take the MTEL General Curriculum Math exam. It has full exams, practice sub-tests, and tons of review. It is very clear and well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book October 1, 2013
By DavidS
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I love the format of this book. The author presents 1-2 pages of information in each lesson followed by a 10 question quiz. There are detailed explanations for each of the 10 questions that are valuable to study even if you got the question correct. Each of the lessons is short and focused, and I am working through a lesson or two a day. I looked at several other Mtel Math books at the library, but liked the style of this author the best so I purchased this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stick to this book and you'll pass! August 20, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I sat down for about 3-4 weeks and went through this book about 2-4 hours a day. I cannot be more thankful for this book! There is no way I would have passed without it. I even passed on my first try! I'm not great at math (and never have been) but thankfully this book is geared for exactly what is on the MTEL. I would go through the book and mark things that I didn't quite understand so that I could go back to them with my boyfriend (who is really a smart cookie!) and then he would help explain things to me in order to help me fully understand. But don't worry, if you don't have someone to further explain the explanations that are written in the book then you may contact Mary Desouza herself. Which is part of the reason why I chose to order this book in the first place! Yes there are some typos, but you'll catch them and you'll be fine. No biggie. What I loved the most is that I can honestly say that as I was sitting through the actual Math MTEL test there were a bunch of questions that when they came up on my screen, immediately a light bulb went off in my head and I could think of the section/page where I did such problems in this book! Also, there were a handful of questions on the test that I would've had NO IDEA how to complete if it weren't for this book. This book is a must-have for anyone taking this test! Thank you so much Mary Desouza!
