About the Author

Sara Lieber’s (Cancún and Yucatán chapters) passion for travel writing was first sparked during a solo trip aboard an airplane as a 6-year-old. Since then she has traversed the U.S. twice by car and once on foot, always making sure to leave plenty of time to enjoy the hidden spots along the way. A Pittsburgher by blood and a Californian at heart, Sara recently relocated from the Bay Area to the Big Apple in pursuit of new horizons and has since found an endless supply of sites to explore within the five boroughs. In 2002, she walked 2,186 miles from Georgia to Maine as a thru-hiker on the Appalachian Trail during a semester off from Pomona College, where she received her B.A. in English and Creative Writing. In her spare time she likes to weld steel, cast bronze, and just generally make things out of metal. She currently works as an editorial assistant at Oxford University Press in New York City.

Liza Monroy (Mexico City chapter) is a 27-year-old writer and freelance journalist. Her articles and essays have appeared in the New York Times, the New York Times Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, Jane, the Village Voice, Time Out New York, and the travel writing anthologies Mexico, A Love Story and Greece, A Love Story. The daughter of a U.S. diplomat, she has lived, worked, and studied in Mexico, Italy, Holland, and the Czech Republic. Liza’s first novel, Mexican High, will be published in 2008. She is a graduate of Emerson College, where she double-majored in film and creative writing. Currently, Liza resides in New York City, where she teaches writing at Mediabistro and is working on a memoir. Her website is www.lizamonroy.com.

Ann Summa (San Miguel de Allende, Costa Chica, and Oaxaca chapters) has worked as a photo-journalist for national publications from People magazine to the Los Angeles Times. A book of her punk rock work is slated to be published by Greybull Press. Based in L.A., she travels frequently to her home in San Miguel Allende, and rides a bike 600 miles every year for AidsLifeCycle (www.aidslifecyle.org) to raise money in memory of her friend Lance Loud.

Jeff Spurrier (Best Of, Basics, North Baja, Los Cabos & Southern Baja, Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta, and Appendices chapters) has traveled extensively in Mexico for Outside magazine, the Los Angeles Times, Details, and other publications. His Irreverent Guide to Los Angeles is currently in its fourth edition. When not in Los Angeles he can be found either biking in the desert near his home in San Miguel de Allende or camping on his plot of jungle land in Nayarit.

Rachel Tavel (Acapulco and Ixtapa & Zihuatanejo chapters) is a native New Yorker with an unrelenting itch to travel. In 2005 she graduated from Bowdoin College with a major in Spanish and a minor in archaeology, but much of her college career was spent on the water as a rower for Bowdoin crew. After graduating, Rachel worked at American Express Publishing, writing and drooling over the photos in Food & Wine and Travel + Leisure magazines. She is most inspired by people-watching in foreign countries and her favorite indulgence is fabulous food. Rachel has visited more countries than states and has spent extended time studying in Spain, exploring Argentina (her mother’s homeland), and volunteering with children in Costa Rica. In the future, Rachel plans to combine her adoration for food and travel with her love for writing and hopes to someday write a column called “Travels with Tavel.”
