3.0 out of 5 stars definitely worth the money
i bought this because i was bored...what a good thing...i spend hours on it...ive been djing trance for years but never got into production...obviously, this isnt any subsitute for a real studio, but before i buy all the hardware, i figured id use this thing to understand the basics of trance progression...before i blew the cash...more than anything, it fills the time...

This program -- yes program, not a game really -- allows you to create music by cobbling together a series of prerecorded sound loops. The program matches tempo between the loops so that what you end up creating has a consistent flow. You can lay out snippets of melody, vocals, bass samples, and percussion, and layer these in various combinations so that what's produced sounds quite professional and danceable.

If this sounds a bit dry and complex, nothing could be further from the truth! Codemasters, the developer, has created a product that's incredibly easy to get going with: as easy as pulling up a menu of samples, laying them out graphically, and playing them back to see how they sound. Music Generator is modeled on PC products like Sonic Foundry's Acid Pro for music professionals, which cost over a couple of hundred dollars, and though Music Generator isn't quite as deep as the professional-level products, it's amazing to see such a clever music making tool available for a home game console at a reasonable price. It took me two minutes to create a hummable song with a thumping dance track, but I've spent much more time since then fooling around with the large library of music samples to create more layered pieces of music.

You can also create a video to match your music, and there's even a multiplayer option where up to four players can collaborate to "jam" in creating music. The only drawback to all this is that the Playstation doesn't have quite enough memory to support a lot of recording or video creation -- the result is that you can create around two to three minute pieces of music, and videos that are basic light shows. Also, creating music is very easy, but some of the more advanced options are a little obscure to implement. Nevertheless, the CD includes song and video combinations created by professionals that show just how much can be done with a little imagination. This is definitely one of the most unique and coolest pieces of software for the Playstation, and anyone, repeat ANYONE, can get started with it. Beware, though -- you won't be able to get near your Playstation once you've let someone else try this program!

let me start off like this....I haven't even tried all the featured yet, and this is already my favorite cd for the PLAYSTATION....I haven't even explored all my options, yet I have been able to create some nice beats....novice or pro, this game allows you to create beats in no time, and turn 5 hours of wasted gameplay into 5 hours of productivity....due to the fact that your not just playing a game, get shot, die, and it's game over....but instead your CREATING music that you can save and play later, record to tape, or cd, and even use to create your own album....a feature that shocked me, was the ability to sample from an audio cd, thats something that I never seen on any system before, the possibilities are infinate....although on the down side besides the memory problom, in my view, this game needs more HIP-HOP, me being a underground artist and all, but then again, you can always create your own riffs....I STRONGLY advise anyone debating on weather or not they should purchasing this cd or not, to do so, you will not regret it....and with the same strength, I advise CODEMASTERS//JESTER to continue this product into even more depth (if it's possible) in the future on paystation 2....one....KVIII

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent Mix!, December 25, 1999

MTV Music Generator is like the "Easy Bake" of Dj's. It allows you to blend and mix riffs with ease and to your liking. You can cut samples from your regular cd's and paste it on your song as well. Although, it's a shame that you can't synthesize a guitar since that would be a great innovation to the game. Also, making your own video is quite fun as well. All in all, it's a great game that should take notice from fans who don't want to spend 2000$+ on DJ equipment.

It was a little tough at first to get your sample from an audio CD and actually getting it into your own mix, but after you go over the first few bumps you should be on your way. I also noticed that there really is thousands or riffs and thousand more samples you could make. The only thing that plagued this game in my opinion is that you can have long, complex songs just starting out. You have to pretty much have to know the specific riff or note or sample you want in your song because of the SRAM issue. But, I'm sure when PSX2 comes out in the fall of 2000 space won't be a problem and this game should be a must for any music fanatic or just a fun little tool. Other than that the jam session is fun but again you need to know the specifics you need. So, even if I knew about these problems I would still buy this excellent game...

I got this program for Christmas last December. I had fun playing with it for a couple weeks before I put it away for a few months. After creating a few simple songs by cutting and pasting the provided samples and playing the Music Jam mode, I was frustrated because I didn't understand and couldn't figure out how to use a lot of the more complex controls - even after reading the manual provided with the program. In the UK, the MTV Music Generator is known as Music 2000. I found out that there is a guide available for the Music 2000 which includes an audio CD with more samples, loops, tutorial tracks and sample riffs. So I ordered the "Music 2000: Official Strategy Guide Book/Cd Package" from Amazon.co.uk and pulled out my MTV Music Generator. Now I'm having a blast learning about the different controls and nuances of the program. I can finally start using all the program features available to create music tracks on my PlayStation with the help of my "strategy guide." MTV Music Generator is a "must have" for PlayStation fans who also love music.

This game is...well differnent. At first the game may be a little confusing but soon you will be cranking out really good songs. While many rave this as "DA BOMB" game...there are things that are to complain about. The load and save feature can be a little confusing and recording clips from you favorie CD's can be annoying and/or painstaking. Even though, I own this game and love to play it. Making music is great but in my opinion all music videos you can make are nothing but swirling color and lack purpose. Other than this dont get me wrong- this game is great!

5.0 out of 5 stars MUSIC CREATION FOR THE PLAYSTATION IS THE BEST EVER, January 23, 2000

This video game is the best one yet! You can create all kinds of different songs such as House tracks, rock tracks, techno tracks and more...and after your finished puttint the song together using the many different sounds, instruments, and even vocals...then it allows you to make a video using all of the different designs and animation that it allows. Also you can take pieces from regular C.D.'s and add them into your song. Another, of the many features is that you can play your regular cd's while it automatically creates a video to match the tone and mood of the song your playing...This is a great game and I would recommend it to any music lover.

I originally bought this game my Freshman year of college in 1999. It took us a long time to ge the hang of it, but we eventually got it. After that, we'd be up for hours and hours all night making hot beats, and remaking instrumentals to songs that we used to like. The Disc got scratched up twice, and I had to replace it both times. Eventually, I went and got a Ps2. I bought the second version, which was so muchmore confusing, and the 3rd version not too long ago which was so limited that the only thing you can do on it is place some of the vocals with tracks. The problem is that you cant speed it up or slow it down and you cant even create your own melodies. So anyway, I rebought the original PS1 version to play on my PS2. Started playing it again last night. This is the version where u can create everything thing from the drum pattern adn melody speed, to the instrument pitch. I feel like Dr. Dre. I'm making beats that people like T.I. and 50 Cent could probably have hit records with. Now I have surround sound system also, so the music sounds even better, and more realistic. Memory gets filled up kinda quick, but if you delete the instruments riffs and sounds that you are not using as you go along, you can keep the memory down. Also I never had luck with the audio samplet part before, but I will try it again. I hear that there are ways to record the songs onto CD, so I'm researching that as well. Overall , the game is about a 9.5 out of 10. I made 3 super off the chain tracks already. Unfortunately U have to have a PS1 memory card to save it so I had to let them go. I went and got one for like 2.00 with extra memory from the local game shop, so as soon as I get off work, It's BACK TO THE LABB!!!!

this is the most unique game out. i have made some cds with this. i have made artist mixes by using the samples. it is great . it has plenty o beats , melodies etc. two flaws: the memory fills up real quick , especially with samples and there are 2 many tecno type beats which isnt bad if u dig it, but other than that u cant find a more creative game.

This is one of the most entertaining programs (it's really NOT a game) I've ever owned. The folks at Jester have created a way to make your own music (you could even market your creations) that is as easy as falling in love. Be careful, though. You could look up to find you've been playing for hours without knowing it. The instruction booklet is a little wordy, but the on-line help makes up for that easily. I would recommend this product to anyone with just the slightest interest in making their own music.
