Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

What do Adam Sandler, Kid Rock, Queen Latifah and Janet Reno have in common? Nothing substantial, surely-but they all appear here in MTV's novelty book of celebrity snapshots. With over 200 luminaries, not to mention "5 nosepickings, 2 nipples, and one bare ass," this goofy collection comprises hundreds of pictures and (with the exception of captions) not a lick of text. The four-panel strips-of the Stone Temple Pilots looking silly, Carmen Electra looking sultry and Method Man looking stoned-come from the MTV studios, where, while lounging in the green room in preparation for a television appearance, the famous and infamous ducked inside the titular photobooth for a few informal pics. The format, though initially appealing, grows monotonous; celebrities are largely distinguished by whether they make funny faces (Sheryl Crow, Eminem, Milla Jovovich, Chris Rock) or not (Snoop Dogg, Vin Diesel, Mary J. Blige, Sam Donaldson). No doubt this volume will provide many adolescents and early post-adolescents with a solid half-hour of pleasure; after that, it's unlikely to be opened again. FYI: This is the first installment of the MTV Overground series, which is a collaboration between Universe and MTV; the next volume, according to the publicity material, will feature "the most rad skateboard designs rolling."

Being a fan of photo booths, it is interesting to see people in the public eye, that we at least think we know, acting like everyone else when faced with an opportunity to ham it up on a strip of 4 photo booth pictures. Celebrities who visit MTV's shows are invited into the MTV Photo Booth, and it is interesting to see who can relax and be themselves, or who has to keep up their public face, even when told to cut loose. Looking at the faces of the celebrities here, you can see who seems uncomfortable, who cuts loose, and who stays in character. You will be surprised with who seems the most relaxed, including Celine Dion and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Lenny Kravitz stays cool, while Adam Sandler looks downright uncomfortable. I am out of the demographic of many of the celebrities on display, but I can say I knew who at least 90% of them were. This book is a lot of fun to look at again and again, and analyze, and enjoy.

I wanted this book when it first came out, but unfortunately I didn't get it until the TRL craze had just died out. I grew up watching TRL with Carson, Nsync, Britney, etc. Every day a new star would pop by and greet us with their presence. It was great.

Now, in this tiny book, you get to see their photobooth snapshots as they appeared in the late 90's & early 00's. Stars from Ben Affleck(my fave pic), Backstreet Boys, Heath Ledger, Christina Ricci, Vitamin C, Celine Dion, Janet Jackson, Usher, etc. etc. It's crazy all the things they do in this book.

Tongues are stuck out, birds are flipped, rock on signs are flared, eyes are bugged out...it's great. Seeing your fave stars at their craziest, uncensored moments in the MTV photobooth.

I recommend this book for any coffee table. It's on mine.

For the loyal, 90s teens (I really wish I was one :( ) who were obsessed with Carson Daly and pop culture, this is THE collectible item for you. Its covered PACKED with clear, outrageous poses by many of music's (then) superstars--all taken in that infamous photobook. A timeless piece of memorabilia. <3<3<3
