5.0 out of 5 stars Mariah In Her Prime
"Unplugged" showcases Mariah in her prime as a live performer. No lip-synching here. Just good, old-fashioned Soul singing. Most of the songs performed here are from her debut "Mariah Carey" and her sophomore "Emotions" discs. IMO, the "Emotions" CD, which features incredible vocals, production and material deeply rooted in R&B, remains Carey's best album to date...

1.0 out of 5 stars Newsflash: This is NOT the famous MTV Unplugged performance that you think it is!!!
So what is it? A live performance she gave at Proctor's Theatre in Schenectady, New York on July 18, 1993 that aired on NBC as a Thanksgiving special later that year. So why is it labeled as the "authentic" MTV Unplugged performance? I guess somebody felt the need to lie to people so that they'd be tricked into buying the DVD so that their regular yacht payment could keep...

"Unplugged" showcases Mariah in her prime as a live performer. No lip-synching here. Just good, old-fashioned Soul singing. Most of the songs performed here are from her debut "Mariah Carey" and her sophomore "Emotions" discs. IMO, the "Emotions" CD, which features incredible vocals, production and material deeply rooted in R&B, remains Carey's best album to date.

Carey is backed by a great band and some fantastic backup singers, including the Price Sisters (with Kelly Price) and Trey Lorenz. Carey breezes comfortably through cuts from both albums as well as her Grammy-nominated duet with Trey, "I'll Be There". It's also great to see some of her best music videos, namely "Can't Let Go" and "Make It Happen", which both make their DVD debut here.

I only have one complaint about this DVD. Due to copyright protection, this DVD can not be played on a computer DVD player. Other than that, this DVD is the best live performance from Mariah that has been captured on video thus far. This DVD just further proves Carey is one of the best R&B vocalists of our time.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW - Truly Amazing, November 5, 2006
This review is from: MTV Unplugged + 3: Mariah Carey (DVD)
I watched this the other day right after the #1s DVD and the difference and growth in this woman is AMAZING. I'm not one of those 'I like the old Mariah' fans because I see her as she really is - one and the same. The stigma attached to Mariah is the same as with Michael and Janet Jackson - they all GREW UP; and the world didn't know how to handle them as a result.

But back to my enjoyment of the release, to see how much she has grown and evolved is SUCH an amazing thing. Her vocals on this are stellar and undeniable. Part of what creates the ambience is the shyness and vulnerability she hadn't yet learned how to mask, hence part of the reason the media tore it bits at the time.

Even though she displays some unparalleled expertise here, I think it shows that it hasn't even occured to her to try some of the more complex texturalisations she she risks in her vocals in later years; though her love for the 'wall of sound' effect is very clear on songs like 'Someday' with the Price Sisters' team work.

Truly a 'must-have' this will DEFINITELY be an addition to my collection before the year is out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Those Were The Days : The Best MTV Unplugged To Date, November 5, 2007
This review is from: MTV Unplugged + 3: Mariah Carey (DVD)
Watching a 22 year old Mariah Carey take the stage in an intimate setting on that cozy night way back in 1992, I was instantly smitten. As a long time Mariah fan, its evident to me that she has been unable to capture the pure innocence of this concert in her later works. I would love for her to revisit her Unplugged Days again - because to me, this remains the most vital and essential Unplugged of the whole lot (yes, I prefer this to the Nirvana one as well!).

Remember, that the live version of "I'll Be There" that Mariah sings here with friend Trey Lorenz was tentatively released to radio back in the day, and ended up becoming a No. 1 smash. That must be one of the few No. 1 Singles that was recorded off a TV Show! Equally stellar is her stunning performance of "If It's Over", which I can (and have) played back to back just to listen to her voice. That voice!

Mariah also used this concert to shut up her detractors. She used the whistle register here (at the end of "Emotions") and the crowd just goes wild. You can feel the respect and awe in the air, and a fresh faced Mariah is never vain - instead, she chooses to let her voice do the talking and doesn't indulge in useless stage banter. Her final song "Can't Let Go" is a slow burner that just oozes sensuality. And that voice! Again, it bears repeating!

I have got to say - even if you're not a Mariah fan, get this. Of all her DVDs, this is undisputably the best Mariah Carey DVD on the market, and if you have to own just one thing by her, this would be it.

Absolutely indispensable. Five Stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mariah Carey at her best, July 15, 2009

Since I was a kid I had listened to the MTV Unplugged CD, and always imagined what it looked like when MC performed these songs. I had always always wanted the video/DVD of her performance on MTV Unplugged and now I finally got it!

You can tell where the minor edits happened among the CD (which is not packaged with the MTV Unplugged +3) and DVD. Mainly between the songs, though. Not too much of a difference, however. The "+3" refers to the 3 music videos that are included on the DVD (videos for EMOTIONS, CAN'T LET GO, and MAKE IT HAPPEN).

Also comes with a home recording of Mariah discussing her career taking off.

This was Mariah in one of her finest moments. She got a lot of criticism for not touring for her first album like everybody else. Well, she sure showed them that she does know how to put on a great show. Every performance in this video was just of such perfection but "Can't Let Go" was my personal favorite. If you're a big Mariah fan, this is one video you have got to add to your collection. And if you're not a fan, you would be doing yourself a favor when you buy this one because you will surely become one. This gem is definitely a MUST-BUY!

So what is it? A live performance she gave at Proctor's Theatre in Schenectady, New York on July 18, 1993 that aired on NBC as a Thanksgiving special later that year. So why is it labeled as the "authentic" MTV Unplugged performance? I guess somebody felt the need to lie to people so that they'd be tricked into buying the DVD so that their regular yacht payment could keep comming in on time like it usually does ;-)

And they are deceptive, aren't they? They, literally, took the photo that the MTV Unplugged CD used and stuck it on this DVD package to help with the con. Did these dummies ever think maybe, just maybe, it would've been better if they got Viacom to actually let them release the REAL performance Mariah gave for MTV Unplugged back in the day? NO! Instead, they pull this type of stunt. Fans don't deserve this type of crap. What a ripoff!!! That's why I'm giving this product a one-star rating.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Good Old Mariah Days, August 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: MTV Unplugged + 3: Mariah Carey (DVD)
This is a very good concert that shows why Mariah became a superstar. Where did that Mariah go? In this video she shows humbleness which you don't see anymore. Her voice is spot on which can't be said anymore. Only problem with this video is the live music is very short.
