Biography

Let’s talk about magic. Because music, at its best, is a kind of magic that lifts you up and takes you somewhere else. “I want my music to sound like throwing yourself out of a tree, or off a tall building, or as if you’re being sucked down into the ocean and you can’t breathe,” says Florence Welch. “It’s something overwhelming and all-encompassing ... Editorial Reviews

US version add three bonus tracks to the audio disc, 'Landscape' (Demo Version), 'Heartlines' (Acoustic) and 'Shake it Out' (Acoustic). Deluxe CD/DVD edition includes bonus DVD. 2012 release that finds the British band stripping down their heavenly sound to the divine essentials. This marks a landmark milestone for Florence + The Machine. Not only is she continuing a tradition popularized by legends including Paul McCartney, Nirvana, Bob Dylan, Alicia Keys, Lauryn Hill and Oasis, she's bringing listeners even closer to her rapturous sound in an acoustic setting. This special night was recorded in New York, NY and is the latest chapter in the iconic MTV Unplugged series. The set list boasts favorites from both of her Universal Republic Records releases. There's a hypnotic rendition of her breakout double platinum single "Dog Days Are Over" as well as a chillingly beautiful cover of Johnny Cash and June Carter's "Jackson" featuring Queens of the Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures singer Josh Homme. In addition, she gives a wonderful take on Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness" for this performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Florence + The Machine In Another Environment April 15, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Listening after hearing their previous studio set Ceremonials, there was a realization that I'd skimped on MTV's Unplugged series in a lot of cases. The only time I ever got involved in this was picking up Alicia Keys' own excellent Alicia Keys: Mtv Unplugged. In fact live albums are generally a very low priority in my collection. Or were until I realized their value. It was clear upon listening to this band that they had the potential to be many different things on stage. One thing they possess is a love of theater. And not in the spectacle/drama queen sense. But the way they emotionally frame and present their music. That sense lends itself wonderfully to live performance when an artist has it. On a level beyond mere performance. Since I haven't heard this bands debut set a few of these songs are unfamiliar. But this was actually the first Florence + The Machine album I considered picking up. It was just released that day and I elected to get it with their previous studio set for my own musical needs. Overall,no regrets.

Basically all that's missing from this is the bigness added to their sound by studio production. It shows you how they really never needed it in the first place. A live orchestra takes the place of the studio here to provide that vast bigness in their sound. Since it opens the same way their previous album did with "Only If For A Night",that's very appropriate. "Drumming Song" is gone up mostly with rhythmic acoustic guitar. "Cosmic Love" as well as "Breaking Down","Never Let Me Go","No Light,No Light","What The Water Gave Me" and "Shake It Out" all showcase that bigness via orchestration approach of this album. Florence's vocals are heard as far more overwhelming live. It's surprising she doesn't create a lot of feedback with her passionate vocal....revelries. They also interpret two standards. "Try A Little Tenderness" is still extremely soulful. But more in a stark piano based Laura Nyro way than Otis Redding's heavily gospel take on it. "Jackson finds them in more of a country/rock sound with a male/female duet format.

Even though this isn't a formal third album for Florence + The Machine,it's again another way for them to express their unique and strong talents. Again it's plain to see here they have a strong future. Not only in the studio but on stage as well. As with most live recordings, the visual element isn't there. DVD helps on that level. But the approach of the band and Florence's voice allows the listener to be imaginative and invent a visualization of their own inside their heads. An active imagination that exists outside anything commercially derived seems to be something lost in many art forms these days. And this album gives you plenty of that. It is one of those albums that probably does stretch the unplugged format, which is usually acoustic/folk oriented in nature. Than again all unplugged means is without electricity. And the fact this band had a harpist, already giving them a unique instrumental sound. Here that orchestral sound is bumped up even more of a notch. And they offer a good range of originals from their own catalog and interpretations to make this musically very strong.

5.0 out of 5 stars Needless to say how amazing Florence's unplugged is! April 11, 2012
By NUEVE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Last week I checked my email account and I noticed that Amazon had sent me an email about the release of this CD/DVD. First of all, I didn't even knew that Miss Florence Welsh and her band had recorded an unplugged and second of all, considering how impressed I am about this girl's music and her "so passionate" talent to come up with AWESOME songs I got very, very excited about this record that I decided to buy it right away. I just watched the show on the DVD a couple of minutes ago and I can tell you now how IMPRESSIVE Florence Welsh's performance is.

You must know that this isn't an unplugged where you'll listen too much of string arrangements, choir voices nor percussions all over the place in the effort of making the show works. On the opposite, here is more than obvious that the whole show sucess was put on Florence's shoulders and her AMAZING voice. The music you'll listen here just helps her to decorate the landscapes she draws in every song and this decision of letting her shine on her own was the smartest the people behind this show could've taken. When you listen to Florence Welsh singing in songs like "Drumming song" or "Never let me go" you understand that her voice is just a gift given to her from heaven. She's so capable to wrap things up in a moment that you just can't stop paying attention to her when she holds a note or when she articulates a word in the music language. Simply amazing. Here you won't find too many hit singles from her short but unmatched music catalogue (considering that she only has two studio albums) but the ones you'll find (Shake it out, Cosmic love -only on the CD- and Dog days are over) are executed with such passion and heart by Welsh that you'll start wondering which versions are better: the studio or the live ones. Talking about the covers, I really loved "Try a little tenderness" (Florence couldn't sing it better) but "Jackson" was more like a "favor" that Florence did to Josh Homme and not the other way around... in this song Florence just let him sing with her as she actually needed him.

Something that really caught my attention and that impressed me as well was the fact that Florence was extremely shy during the whole show. If you pay attention she barely moves from the same spot since song 1 and she hardly ever looks at the audience because she seems to be so focused in what she's doing that she doesn't pay attention to anything else at all. Also, you can tell that she's not very comfortable talking to people when she's on stage either. When she thanks the audience or when she tries to say something about the place where she is, it's hard to understand what she actually says since she keeps her voice down. This just tells me that either she's still naive to deal with audiences (something so hard to believe) or she's just humble enough to see herself as a pop star or whatever (I'm sure she's not comfortable with those tags either). However you see it, watching her singing live in this unplugged is a delightful experience for sure. I really hope to see her live in a concert at least once. BTW, thumbs up to all those young boys and girls sitting in the front row. Their music taste is definitely amazing. Keep it up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible!! April 21, 2012

Incredible is the best word I can use to describe Florence Welch. I was already a fan, but I have a whole new respect for her talent. I believe the DVD is the best part of the deluxe edition. Watching her sing, I was amazed at her effortless control and ability to hold notes for what seemed like an eternity. As for Audio quality, the DVD is superior to the CD. This was the first time I have owned a copy of the same performance on two different media and been able to compare them directly. I ripped the audio from the DVD and CD and listened through an external DAC. The CD sounds great but is compressed and sounds thin in comparison to the DVD audio track which sounded more realistic. The DVD rip is 24/48 but the actual bitrate is about 950-1000kbps which is higher than that of the CD (about 850kbps). I highly recommend this album and the Deluxe edition for those who are interested in the best possible recording quality.

I like the indie style of Florence and really enjoyed her albums, but the unplugged version is kind of shrill. Some songs might give you headache.

4.0 out of 5 stars Concert is great; video could be better quality.
The video quality on the DVD is disapponting -- I had hoped for a higher-resolution recording, with better surround, I think. It's more grainy than I had wished. Read more
