Viva La Bam Season 1

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

From Candid Camera to American Idol, American television viewers' appetite for watching other folks get embarrassed, humiliated, or worse at the hands of both themselves and others never seems to wane. How else to explain the fact that MTV's Jackass, a show built on dangerous, painful, and stupid stunts, could spawn not only a feature film but a spin-off like Viva La Bam, issued here in a three-disc set compiling the show's fourth and fifth seasons with extensive bonus material? This is classic MTV fare, made by and for slackers, stoners, and skateboarders, the tattoo and heavy metal crowd who get off on the kind of jejune, puerile behavior that Bam Margera and his crew celebrate in every one of these 16 episodes. A combination of The Tom Green Show, Paris Hilton's The Simple Life, and the aforementioned Jackass, Viva La Bam is hardly what one would call innocent, but it's neither as cruel nor as mean-spirited as others of its ilk. It focuses less on outrageous stunts than on Bam's good-natured tormenting of his family, including mother April ("Ape"), dad Phil, and especially uncle-clown Don Vito (the latter two have a combined girth roughly equal to the Earth's circumference); in the two-parter that opens the fourth season, for instance, they follow Phil and Ape to Europe (later adventures take them to Brazil, Mexico, Finland, and Russia), wreaking havoc everywhere they go and pretty much living up to the stereotypical image of the boorish, ignorant American abroad. There are guest appearances by rockers like the Bloodhound Gang, Hanoi Rocks, HIM, the cartoonish Gwar, and even Billy Idol, along with ace stunt bikers the Metal Mulisha, but unless your idea of hilarity involves folks dumping food on one another (even better if the dumpee is asleep), Viva La Bam's appeal will be limited, to say the least. On the other hand, folks who do enjoy that kind of thing should be delighted. The third disc is comprised of over two hours of bonus material, including deleted scenes and commentary by Bam and the gang. --Sam Graham

Product Description

Based on the premise of reality television, VIVA LA BAM centers on the fanatical and often extreme life of pro-skater Bam Margera and his fascination with amusement at the expense of his family and friends. With an almost contagious energetic persona, Bam is able to instigate his friends into lavishly planned tricks plotted against his loved ones. From turning his parents' house into a skate park to putting an alligator in his mother's kitchen, catastrophe and emotional abuse has never been so funny.

4.0 out of 5 stars You think your parents had it rough? October 25, 2004
By Cubist
Format:DVD
No matter how bad your parents thought you were as a kid, they should thank their lucky stars that they aren't Phil and April Margera. Professional skateboarder and all-around pain in the ass, Bam Margera is the Dennis the Menace for the new millennium. After the Jackass show ended it splintered off into two strains, one of which, Viva La Bam, stars Bam and his crew (other Jackass survivors, Ryan Dunn, Raab Himself, Rake Yorn, Brandon DiCamillo) as they find new ways to torment his long-suffering parents. Bam and his gang pull all sorts of pranks and stunts to make his parents' lives a living hell. Throw in the nearly incomprehensible Don Vito (Phil's rather large brother) and you've got the makings for one of the more entertaining reality shows.

Fans will be pleased to know that all the episodes are featured gloriously uncut with all the cuss words intact! Breathe easy, parents. The uncut nastiness is limited to the language. The shameless nudity is still blurred.

There are audio commentaries for every episode by Bam, Phil, April, Ryan, Brandon, Rake, Tim and Raab. As you can imagine, these are pretty funny, chaotic tracks as Bam and co. dish on all sorts of behind-the-scenes stories. Bam, obviously, dominates these tracks, but his mom does comment quite a bit as well. Although, the glaring omission of Don Vito is unacceptable!

There are nine deleted scenes, including more footage of Bam building a skate park in his parent's house and Raab under the thrall of a hypnotist while the boys were in Las Vegas.

"Scavenger Hunt List" is the entire list of tasks that had to be accomplished from the season's climatic final episode.

"Q&A**Holes" is a bunch of text screens with the cast answering several questions not so seriously.

There is a small collection of behind-the-scenes photos.

There is also music video's for Bam's brother's band, CKY, Clutch, Turbonegro and the DiCamillo Sisters (basically Brandon, Bam and the lead singer from the Bloodhound Gang).

For such a nonsensical show there is a surprisingly amount of extras that are all done in the same flavour as the show. Even the menus capture the vibe of the show, which is a nice touch. Fans will no doubt dig this collection while all others are advised to stay far away! You may not derive any deep meaning from this show but there are worse ways to kill a Friday night.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME SHOW October 15, 2004
By MMAfan
Format:DVD
Well im glad its coming out but I wish it would have included season 2 also. Giving us season 1 is just going to make us want the other seasons more. This is an awesome show though. Don Vito is hilarious. Bam's cool. It's neat to see someone who can get away with anything they want to do. What you'll get in this set s 8 episodes(Listed below). It's 150 minutes long. A little bit of extras. What you'll see in these episodes is Phil starving because he can't eat anything for one day, Bam and his friends stuck on an island for a day, Don Vito getting kicked out of a casino, Don Vito racing another guy on a motorized cart, a lot of cars being totally smashed, an entire skatepark/ice rink built in and outside Bam's house, AND LOT'S MORE. That's just a little of season 1. The only thing I don't get is that Wildboyz Season 1 is 25 minutes longer then this season of Viva La Bam and this set is almost 10 dollars more. Still this is a good set to own.(Below episodes listed for Season 1)

Phil's Hell Day

Bam Hosts A Concert (don't feed Phil)

The Family Reunion

We're Going to Vegas!

Three-Day Weekend

The Christmas Episode

April Gets Revenge

The Scavenger Hunt

5.0 out of 5 stars Dennis the Menace Meets Omen January 18, 2006
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Viva La Bam is constantly and unfairly being compared to Jackass. They are similar, but in very small ways, and the one that stands out the most is the fact that Bam Margera is in this as well. They don't do the same masochistic stunts you'd find in Jackass. There's rarely ever any forced vomiting or cruelty to animals (like in Wild Boys). What Bam does is torment his surprisingly tolerant parents. This, the first volume, contains the first eight episodes of the show (an entire season) plus a disc of special features:

Episode 1: Phil's Hell Day/Bam's Skate Park: they couldn't have picked a better episode to start the season.

Episode 2: Don't Feed Phil: Bam does everything in his power to deny Phil food for a day.

Episode 3: Family Reunion: Bam's attention turns to his extended family, and you begin to realize that Bam isn't as crazy as his family.

Episode 4: Viva Las Vegas: Rabb gets a mail order bride, and April and Phil celebrate their anniversary. Vito snaps.

Episode 5: Paint Phil Blue & Other Stories: Bam paints Phil, steals April's car, and dig a tunnel into Vito's house.

Episode 6: Very Merry Margera Christmas: Bam celebrates Christmas with friends in the only way he knows how.

Episode 7: April's Revenge: Bam's gets what's coming to him yet April, the person responsible, doesn't realize what she's got herself into.

Episode 8: Scavenger Hunt: Bam and friends tore all of West Chester in order to score points in a crazy scavenger hunt.

The bonus in this collection, though, comes in the special features disc. This includes a heap of deleted scenes which are funnier than anything you can find in the series, if a little more gross at times. It has other things as well, but the deleted scenes are where to be when you pop this into your DVD player.

Though still headed by a bunch of jerks, Viva La Bam isn't nearly as controversial as Jackass or even the CKY Trilogy, though it's equally as funny as both. These DVDs contain some simple laughs that are, at the very least, guaranteed, something that's needed in our world today. Pick this up if you liked Jackass or Wildboys, or are a fan of skateboarding.
