Jess Butcher has done very well with his graphic "Muleshoe" trip through backwoods Oklahoma and Kansas. It is set in some pretty remote, but interesting country. Entertaining, easy to read and follow, this is a good effort. You'll have a a good number of chuckles with this one. Butcher's real-life characters are vividly described, and ....many of them we can identify with or recognize as those we must have known from somewhere. A very enjoyable, quick read, highly recommended!

The story idea and variety of characters were great, but ....
This writer needs to work on a few things. First of all his indiscriminate use of italics was quite disconcerting. They popped up in phrases, names, and so on with no rhyme or reason, a bit like a tic. The other noteworthy complaint is that the descriptions and backstories of the various characters were not woven into the story but thrown out when the character was introduced in a disjointed and clumsy manner, interrupting the continuity.
On the plus side, the story detail and historical context were excellent. The author knows his material and his geography, as well as the people who inhabit it and conveyed this to the reader. I felt I knew Ann and Miss Grace as well as the horrible little Tree man. Well done. With a bit more work on introductions and a Do Not Touch label on the italics button, this could be an excellent work.

The writing style was flat and amateurish. I don't mind sex scenes in literature so long as they advance th plot or add depth to the characters. The sexual encounters in this novel do neither. The only reason I finished reading it was because of the Civil War incidents involving guerrillas in Missouri. So glad I borrowed this book through Prime so that I wasted only time and not money.

This is a great quick read that has all the elements of a good thriller. Great story that grabs you from the beginning. Hard to put this one down.

***Warning - Spoilers Included in this Review***

Muleshoe proved to be a very engaging read. I was a little unsure if I really wanted to continue reading when I first started as the 'bad' guys were pretty sickening. I did decide to keep reading, however, and all in all I am glad I did.
The mystery is a good one involving history spanning over a hundred years. At times it was a little hard to follow the characters as the action switched from past to present.

The main characters in this book are very interesting, if not fully fleshed out. There are moments of humor to go along with the action.

It wasn't terribly hard to figure out who the villain was, but the journey is still well worth the time. As pat as the outcome of the book is, there is something terribly satisfying about bad guys getting their comeuppance, and in such a spectacular way as well. If only real life worked like that.

The major complaint I have about this book, which I have with many mystery/suspense books, is the contrived romance. I so wish mystery writers would realize that, if written properly, such tales can stand on their own without having to throw romance into the mix. When this book was getting down to the 'nitty gritty' and the reader is anxious to learn the outcome, there were irritating pauses in the story for 'friends and lovers' time. The flow of the book was majorly hampered by this.

Also, we are asked to believe that a woman who is sharp enough to be Chief of Police and who apparently loves her two small daughters very deeply is so casual as to expose them to a man she's known less than a week and falls for him just as quickly.

In my opinion, this book was on the level of a predictable soap opera; very superficial. I would not categorize myself as a "deep reader," but, when I closed this book, I took nothing away from it. I really hate to say it was a waste of my time, but would only recommend it to someone who has absolutely nothing else to do.

I enjoyed this. Its got flawed good guys (both sexes) and bad bad guys and a couple of twists and turns - but it keeps you turning the pages. At 99 cents my expectations are low and this book turned out to be way better than the pricing indicated. I get tired of the murder-a-minute, smart/ego-driven dialogue and a huge twist every 3 pages genre. This book is gentler but but no less engaging. Also its a quick read and easier to remember where you were up to if, like I was, you are forced to take a few days break in reading it.
