Book Description

Three young boys. One girl. Friendship, honor, love. An oath. Betrayal. It all ended up in murder.

There was only one rule in our neighborhood—never break an oath. But oaths are easy to take and damn hard to keep.
Now I'm staring at my best friend, lying on the floor in a pool of blood, my bullet in his gut. Where the hell did it go wrong?
To understand that you’d have to go back to the beginning, back to when the three of us ruled the neighborhood.

Editorial Reviews

From eNovel Reviews:

"Giacomo Giammatteo may be the Mario Puzo of our time. His debut novel is breathtaking and groundbreaking. He creates a story that involves the conflicts of reality that pull at us from both sides of the tracks. This isn't your typical mob story."

From Keri English for Indie Reader:

"Murder Takes Time plows through your mind like a freight train. Heavy hitting and well crafted, Giacomo Giammatteo delves into the New York underworld from a fresh perspective. Part mob story, part psychological thriller, this book is not for the weak of heart (or stomach!) This is a new breed of book."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! April 24, 2012
By Obi
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love to read and I read a lot, but I am not the kind of person who can't lay down a book until it is finished. A few chapters every day is fine with me.
Or so I thought...
"Murder takes time" just didn't let go. After the first few chapters, I just kept on reading and reading, eager to learn more. This book and the way it is writen somehow manages to put you right in the middle of the story from the get go. No drag and endless "getting into it". You read the first few pages, the first chapters and you are right there. I usually read a lot from Stephen King and lately almost everything from Dean Koontz I can get my hands on. And now I definitely have to add Giammatteo to the list of my "if it's out, get it" list.

This novel is not just a murder mystery.
This novel is not just a thriller.
This novel is not just a love story.
This novel is not just a life story.

This novel is all in one. Geniously combined in a way that never lets any part of it be too dominant. It is a very well rounded reading experience and I cannot recommend this book more. It is truly hard to believe that this is a debut novel. I read a lot worse from well established authors and hardly anything better.

The only word of caution I have to state is that this is not a book for kids. It contains graphic descriptions of brutal scenes and uses quite a few curse words. But hey, after all we are talking about a book that has the word "murder" in its title. And besides that, I think I would have a hard time imagining a mobster sayig things like: Oh what a pity! :)

In a nutshell: Don't miss out on this book. Go, get it! You will not be disapointed. And since I will buy whatever Giammatteo publishes next, look out for upcoming reviews :)

5.0 out of 5 stars In a category of its own. True page-turner! April 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I only RARELY read fiction, so for me to rave about this book and tell you I HAD to turn the page and see what happened next is saying an awful lot! (And by the way, for my fellow nonfiction lovers, parts of Giammatteo's book are based on real-life events so it's not fiction in the strictest sense of the word.)

What I liked most about this book is that it's unique. Murder Takes Time isn't easy to sum up, in part, because of that uniqueness. It's really in a category all to itself. In fact, to call it a "mob book" would be oversimplifying and would hardly do it justice.

The author cleverly weaves layers into the book (while still managing to maintain a fast-paced, action-filled, plot) so that, at the end of the day, there's something for everybody in the book. It's part mob story, part detective story/psychological thriller, part love story, part coming of age story all rolled into one.

A multi-faceted book like that might seem impossible to pull off without one facet of the story detracting from another (I'd be thinking that if I heard someone else say it) but you'll just have to trust me here...or see for yourself. The author does it so well that each facet compliments the others and only makes the story that much more interesting. Just as you feel like you've figured someone out and wrapped up one mystery, he teases you with another.

SIDE NOTE: The whole time I read this book, the one thing that kept jumping out at me was how it would make a great movie, but for the life of me, I couldn't pinpoint why. Something about it just gives you that impression.

5.0 out of 5 stars CAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT BOOK IN THIS SERIES!!! April 16, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I really liked this book, it is exciting and gripping. MURDER TAKES TIME gets your attention fast, it is riveting and nearly impossible to put down. The characters are strong. I particularly like the way the author does the narrative and dialogue.
It is difficult to believe this is Giammatteo's first novel. He has a vivid imagination and is a great story teller. I can't wait for his next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book I've Read This Year September 4, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Murder Takes Time: Friendship & Honor Series, Book One (Volume 1)
This is the best book I've read this year.

I've never read the Godfather. I've never been drawn to gangster novels. I'm not even big on gritty crime dramas. I couldn't tell you why I bought this one. Maybe it was the feeling I got from the first couple pages. There was something different about it. Second sentence: Killing was an art, requiring finesse, planning, skill--and above all--patience. Depending on your mood, you could read that as lurid for lurid's sake. I read it as extraordinary. That's what I ended up reading, an extraordinary book.

This book is not a murder mystery. It's not a crime drama. It's not a mob story. It is much more. It's a horror story. It's a warm reflection on youth and friendship. It's a tragedy. It's an innocent love story. It's a gritty descent into violence. It's a hard look at love, honor, revenge and redemption. It is a complex story that will demand your full attention.

I usually read 2-3 books at once. One that I've dragged to the other room and forgot where I put it and the one I found while looking for the first. I was doing that with Murder Takes Time clear up to the third chapter. Six pages of this, ten pages of that. I realized Murder Takes Time was too deep and too complex to play that game. I set everything else aside and sat down one Saturday to read the book clear through. It was that good.

The story is told on two time lines and from several different Points Of View (POV). There might be a few too many POVs, which requires a little more attention than the average book, but in the end, it's worth it.

More About the Author

I live in Texas now, but I grew up in Cleland Heights, a mixed ethnic neighborhood in Wilmington, Delaware, that sat on the fringes of the Italian, Irish and Polish neighborhoods. The main characters of Murder Takes Time grew up in Cleland Heights, and many of the scenes in the book were taken from real-life experiences.

Since this is a bio some of you might wonder what I do. I've had a successful 30 year career as a headhunter, recruiting top talent for some of the world's best companies--Apple, Johnson & Johnson, Abbott Laboratories, and many high-profile start-up companies.

During that time I've completed more than 500 searches, which translates into evaluating, editing, and writing thousands of resumes. I have also interviewed and done reference checks on more than 1,000 candidates. I've learned what companies want to see on a resume--and, perhaps more importantly--what they don't. You'll find a lot more information in the book and on my website.

Getting back to the bio--when my kids were young I left the Northeast and settled in Texas, where my wife suggested we get a few animals. I should have known better; we now have a full-blown animal sanctuary with rescues from all over. At last count we had 45 animals--11 dogs, a horse, a three-legged cat and 5 others, and 26 pigs.

Oh, and one crazy--and very large--wild boar, who takes walks with me every day and happens to also be my best buddy.

In the evening I help my wife tend to the animals, and at night--late at night--I turn into a writer.
