4.0 out of 5 stars Still worth if after a year..., October 23, 2006

This review is from: SONY MV900SDS 9" Mobile DVD Dream(TM) System for Car Video (Electronics)
We purchased this player a little over a year ago for our Jeep Grand Cherokee. I installed it myself, which only took a day and turned out great. Dropped the headliner, installed a 3/4" plywood support between roof crossmembers, ran the wiring and tapped into the wires up under the dash. Installed the headliner and screwed the DVD player in place.
After a year of use, we have had one problem. Over the course of time, the monitor became easier and easier to swivel, to the point it wouldn't stay still. Then, it broke entirely from its support and hung by the wires. I stowed it away and -attempted- to call Sony tech support. As previous reviewer stated, it left me very upset with Sony.
First, we can an email with a part number...no picture, nothing to verify that it may be what we are looking for. After we reply and several days we get a response stating parts are no longer available and sorry. I guess they do offer a flat rate service fee, if you send it in.
I figured I might as well look into it, what harm can I do? So I took the monitor off the base, and kept searching until I took the back of the monitor off and found two screws that had worked themselves loose from rotating it! Screwed everything back together and it is like brand new again.
I'm writing this review as I feel this will probably happen to others. You'll find those two little screws inside the monitor cover, which you have to remove 4 screws and pry off the plastic back. I used LocTite on the screws so they won't work themselves out again.

Otherwise, the player is nice and very stable. They integrated speakers are great for little kids like mine that can't wear headphones yet. And with the FM transmitter it sounds like a surround sound home theater with the windows up and a good movie playing!

If the FM transmitter wasn't working, it is because it was installed improperly (which is hard to NOT do correctly).
If it shakes, it's because a proper support was not created above the headliner.

5.0 out of 5 stars sweet mobile video :), August 1, 2004
This review is from: SONY MV900SDS 9" Mobile DVD Dream(TM) System for Car Video (Electronics)
just installed this system in my 2003 4runner limited with a moonroof and I must say, it looks great. my interior is the stone grey leather and this unit matches like it was meant to be there. i had to do a little cutting of the headliner but the dome light/rear seat audio system provided all the wiring i needed. i just put some wood in there to give the unit something to grab on to and wired it up. took about 4 hours total, including all the wring and fabricating of wood supports. wiring the fm modulator into the wiring from the rear side window antenna was a pain and it has a little static most of the time, but it is nice that you have a range of frequencies in which to set it for best performance. plus, the stock 4runner 6 disc in dash jbl system has a surround sound feature :) all in all very nice and worth the price...although i didn't pay full retail....

In spite of the reviews that this unit did a lot of shaking, we decided to go with this model. We got it at Brandsmart for $398!!! It took the installers less than 4 hours to install and looks as if it were always a part of the car. We haven't really seen any shaking that would be a problem... nothing more than you'd see in any other unit.

We just got back from a long car trip yesterday, and our 9-year-old was able to handle just about every aspect of running the DVD player. When she couldn't, we were able to turn the monitor around 180 degrees so we could see the screen and make the fixes ourselves. (Pretty darn cool, I think!) The headphones worked great as well. Absolutely no complaints... hope it'll last!
