Robbie Belmont was a superstar catcher in high school, but now he is a freshman in college at Redstone University. He has to adjust too many changes in his life, new friends, new location, new teachers, new subjects, new teammates and a higher level of talent to compete against. Furthermore, Eagle Wilson, the best pitcher on the team is the former boyfriend of Robbie's girlfriend and he has designs on wooing her back. This desire spills over into the relationship between Robbie and Eagle when they are playing, a disaster when they must work so closely together.
Robbie is a team player so he tries all he can think of to establish a solid working relationship with Eagle, but he makes little progress. Although Robbie is still an excellent handler of pitchers, his batting suffers and for the first time in his life he is mired in a slump. As the Redstone Colts enter their post-season tournament, things look bleak, but Robbie is able to energize his team and they emerge triumphant. There are many lessons for the young man in this book, how natural changes in your life can affect your performance in sports and how you must adjust and work through them. Montgomery also includes problems that young men can have in their relationships with members of the opposite sex. While sports can be a focus in your life, it will never be the only thing. Being successful at sports means being able to balance and manage all other things, a lesson that is often lost in the modern world where sports sometimes seems to approach the level of a religion. |
