All COBOL programmers in IBM's MVS mainframe operating environment (estimated at more than a million) use Job Control Language (JCL). 5.0 out of 5 stars A must for the novice a reference for the initiated; xlnt, May 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The MVS JCL Primer (J Ranade Ibm Series) (Paperback)
The text takes a confusing, subject and gives order and a sense of simplicity in its systematic and progressive approach. The plethora of examples contain step-by-step explanations and build upon the books previous lessons. Though the style is not tutorial you do have a sense that the authors are taking you by the hand and guiding you to JCL mastery. This book could well substitute for a semester of JCL in college.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good reference book for MVS/ESA JCL, March 31, 1999
This review is from: The MVS JCL Primer (J Ranade Ibm Series) (Paperback)
This book explains JCL for all levels of programmers. Since being updated for MVS/ESA, it contains all the new JCL features available. It is handy as both a reference and a how-to explanation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good teaching guide but quickly becoming outdated, April 23, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: The MVS JCL Primer (J Ranade Ibm Series) (Paperback)
This book is good for teaching JCL to beginners. It is quickly becoming outdated as it does not cover the new MVS/ESA enhancements such as IF/THEN/ELSE condition code logic, standalone keywords such as RECFM, LRECL, etc. This book should be considered for a beginner but not as a reference due to the outdated nature of the book
