Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Finally, a UNIX reference specifically for MVS professionals. You've just built a successful career in MVS when suddenly everything is turning UNIX. To maintain your value to your current employer - or to increase your worth on the open market - you too must make the move to open systems. Most UNIX books fall into two categories: those that assume you know everything about UNIX, and those that assume you know about computers! Finally, technical mainframe professionals have resource to call their own - Richard J. Bambara's MVS and UNIX, the first UNIX sourcebook for MVS users. It's so perfectly balanced, so clearly written, that UNIX pros may want to read it too! Covering the three major UNIX platforms, it compares and contrasts operating systems and provides a complete analysis of: Hardware; System/user interfaces and environments; Shells [native TSO and UNIX, ISPF], Software {KornShell and VI The Editor], MVS and UNIX utilities; CICS and Online Transaction Processing; DB2 Common Server; Using the Network; Job and Process Control; Systems Performance. More importantly, it's the best source of guidance in making the difficult choice between integration and migration. With over 600 pages, this handbook is a true survival guide for any mainframe professional whose environments and applications are moving to UNIX.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real English Computer Talk, December 30, 1999
This review is from: MVS and UNIX: A Survival Handbook for Multi-Platform Users, Developers, and Managers (Paperback)
Finally a book in real English that uses concrete words to explain computer concepts. Excellent material on MVS giving both CLEAR overview and detail. Excellent insight on connectivity problems/options and what vendors' products address which problems. If you like books that BUILD ON CONCRETE CONCEPTS and are arranged in an orderly, hierarchial fashion, this is the book.

Oh, did I mention the content is impecable? Old MVS guys? Gotta have this one.
