MXR Phase 90

For over four decades, the MXR PHASE 90 has been a mainstay on the pedal boards of millions of musicians around the globe. It doesn’t matter whether the genre is rock, metal, alternative, jazz, world-beat, or if the instrument is guitar, bass, keys, vocals, or strings: the Phase 90 has been there through it all to add its distinctly lush voice to a musician’s tone palette.

MXR

Since 1972, MXR has been a pioneer of the effects pedal market with the revolutionary development of tough and rugged stomp boxes, simple utilitarian designs, small sizes, and 100% rich analog tone. Today, Dunlop continues MXR's traditional pedal line of original MXR classics, as well as new modern classics like the Carbon Copy and Fullbore Metal. However, MXR continues to inspire with new designs. The MXR Custom Shop faithfully resurrects recreations of the long-lost vintage models such as the hand-wired Phase 45, as well as doing limited runs of pedals featuring premium components and highly modified designs, such as the new Custom Comp.

Its sound can go with distortion or clean, it doesn't matter.

As the other reviewer pointed out, modern effects processors just don't get phasers (or really any modulation) right. You absolutely need this for an authentic early Pink Floyd sound (before Gilmour switched to a EM Flanger around time of the Animals tour). There is a very simple mod to make sound a little more like the classic "Script Logo" version that involves cutting one resistor. I prefer the sound that way, but even stock this is a great little effect that does one thing and does it well.

You'd think mxr would make a phaser as good as its namesake ... sorry. Obvioulsy, when they sold out to Dunlop, something didn't go right .... THIS phase 90 is a very aggressive 4 stage phaser that adds heaps of distortion. If that's what you're going for, then sure go ahead buy it. But if you're looking for creamy sweeps look elsewhere, perhaps the script logo version, or a small stone, or even the BBE Soul Vibe, but this is a phase 90 in name only. I give it two stars because someone may want this kind of sound.

I have several MXR pedals. Every one is superb--except for this PHASE 90 (the non-"script" version reviewed here). This PHASE 90 is worthless for anyone who wants to use it while playing clean, for it adds a tsunami of irritating distortion, a swoosh of sonic dirt. I did some research and discovered that other people who also hate this pedal's distortion suggest some modifications. (Look up "MXR Phase 90 Mods," and "Erik's Corner" will show you how.) I made the "R28," "C11," and "C12" modifications. The result: a slightly improved phaser, one that still churned out plenty of distortion. Finally, I tried adjusting the internal trim pot. On no setting could I get rid of ... you guessed it: distortion. I spent literally hours in a futile and frustrating effort to make this pedal sound merely acceptable. No luck. BOTTOM LINE: IF YOU WANT A PHASER THAT DOESN'T ADD SIGNIFICANT DISTORTION, AVOID THIS INCARNATION OF THE PHASE 90.

Received this as a gift for Christmas. I had been asking for the "script" version, and I think my poor girlfriend just saw the cheaper version and assumed it was the same thing. If you want a pedal that will add a whole ton of distortion as well as boosting your volume about 5 notches, then I guess this is the pedal for you. I find it to be completely useless when using any kind of distortion or overdrive. The signal boost is so significant it's startling (not good if you're trying to create textures or use the phase during transitions). It's not AS noticeable when playing clean, but it's still there and if you combine it with any other effects (reverb, delay) you will notice even more. This pedal will literally alter the tone of everything you have, while simultaneously cranking the volume. Spend the extra cash, get the script. Don't waste time or money on this one. Also, on a side note, why on Earth does MXR put the DC inputs on the lower right side of their pedals???? It's infuriating.

When I first started to build my pedal board several years ago, I got one of these, and I tried it our for all of TEN minutes before sending it back for a replacement. I honestly ~believed~ the one I received was defective, and I was stunned when its replacement arrived and sounded exactly the same. Yuck. Don't believe the false endorsements of these products on amazon by Dunlop Manufacturing Inc - don't play your guitar through a ridiculous , thin-sounding, tone-sucking, mass produced piece of junk that goes <~POP~!!!> and <HISSSSSSSSSS!> when you hit the switch. This may have been "good" 30 years ago, but now nearly EVERY phaser option out there - even ones based on this circuit but built by other smaller companies - is better sounding and more useful than this.

I'm pretty familiar with this phaser, and I own a few MXR pedals. They are overall a good quality product, and MXR has made quite a name for themselves in the many years they have been around. I ordered a used one, and was shipped one that was beat half to death. However, it works perfectly and I;m sure it will for years to come cause I know how well they are made. I have thrown my old MXR distortion+ to the concrete many times to test it's quality in front of my friends, and it's never given me a problem.

I had this pedal for a couple months until the push-button switch broke on me, but I suppose that's what I get for buying it used. Other than that the Phase 90 is a solid pedal. In stock condition, the phase effect is kind of rough, and gives off some unwanted distortion. BUT it can be fixed with the VERY SIMPLE R28, C11, and C12 mods found in the link below. I have no experience with circuits or soldering, but I carried these mods out with no problem (all you have to do is clip a reistor and two circuits). With the mods, this is a great pedal with a sound that's just right.

MOD INSTRUCTIONS: [...]
PROS
Looks pretty
Single rate knob makes it easy to operate
Classic phaser sound (not to deep, not too thin)

CONS
Without the mentioned mods, the pedal gives off unwanted distortion
Can't adjust depth of phase

COMPARED TO THE EHX SMALL STONE, the Phase 90 sounds like the mid range phase depth between the 2 settings of the Small Stone's color switch. Although the Small Stone has a smoother, deeper sounding sweep, its phase is either too subtle or extremely noticeable. The Phase 90s effect is between those two. Overall, the Phase 90 would suit any playing style.

YES, I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PEDAL
