Review

Mythology:  our poems, our novels, and even our daily journals teem with classical allusions; nor can a visit to our art galleries and museums be fully enjoyed without something more than a mere superficial knowledge of a subject which has in all ages inspired painters, sculptors, and poets.

What Kindle Readers Want To Know:

*It has a click-able Table of Contests, yay!
(Honestly, all ebooks should have this, many do not...)

*Formatting is fine, text reads well,
no center justification or weird margins.

E.M. Berens pulls no punches here. What you get is an exhaustive volume of Greek and Roman Myths, Festivals, Temple Worship etc. From the Primordial Gods to the Titans, from the Olympians to the Demigods, to the heroes of legend.

For the price it is ridiculously informative and entertaining!
I have tried out several Mythology books on Kindle and this is the best!

Buy it, read it, but be warned....: you might feel like wearing a toga
and ruling on high from Mt. Olympus!

This book was written for "young minds" so, like Bulfinch before him, Berens eliminates all mention of sex - Such that the satyrs have no erections, Priapus has no penis and Venus has no attributes or qualities whatever. In this archaic book, the great stories of the mythological age become emasculated Victorian parodies. As a book for grownups, it gets only one star.
Also, note that there are no myths or legends in this book - only Beren's slanted descriptions of them.

Update:
After using this book for several months, I've reconsidered my hasty first impressions; In 1880 when Berens wrote this book Victoria's monarchy of morality and family values was an overriding influence in England and also considering the powerful control of religionists in the ninteenth century he probably couldn't have depicted the Greek gods in all their lacivious glory - so I forgive the prudishness and inaccuracies. The other thing I realized is that Berens' story telling skills are as good as they get - his recounting of the exploits of the old gods bring them back to life.

This excellent book should be in Your library.

This is my first review, so I'll be first telling about the content of this book. This book is a complete history of Roman gods and the myths associated with them.

The first one were Uranus and Gaea- the parents of all the gods. Later Giants and Titans came and after them Olympians. All share a common fate where son will dethrone his own father. This happened with Uranus being dethroned by his own son Titan Cronus and he also faced the same fate by his own son Zeus who later became King of Gods.

Reading this book in Kindle-PC was a different experience. Author has used many Roman phrases which is difficult to understand. Also, author has used Aides in the place of Hades (Brother of Zeus and God of Underworld).

Overall, this book has complete information about the legends and Gods of Ancient Romans and Greece.

You should buy this if you are interested in Roman and Greece culture.

Regardless of the book's literary content, I found I couldn't get through the first few pages because the ebook formatting (at least on my kindle) turned out to be quite poor. The biggest annoyance was that the entire book was center-justified, and no amount of fiddling with the kindle justification control had any effect. I would love to read the book but found this formatting issue so distracting I gave up on trying.

I was very happy to see newer stories and myths, instead of the same old Hercules 12 trials, Athena popping from Zeus' head, etc..... Love it and very educational.
