The entire reason I purchased the kit was to get the cloning software (regularly $60). When you start up the software, it asks you for a key (which the manual says is on the back of the CD sleeve). It's not there, ended up using an open source product to clone my old drive.

The SSD Magician software also says there's new firmware, but when it tries to download it, it sends me a 404 on the Samsung website. Tried to manually download and apply the firmware, but the Magician software says the firmware does not apply to the drive. Oh, and SSD Magician has a hard time with Windows 8. Drive's great, Samsung's software solution sucks.

This is the first SSD that I've ever bought. The price of SSD's were always a little out of my budget and I just couldn't persuade myself to buy one in the past. The size was often too small to justify the price.

For just a bit under 400 dollars I decided to buy the 500gb SSD and so far I must admit I don't understand why I never bought one before. The read/write speeds are just ridiculous. The boot times show quite a noticeable difference from a regular HDD. Applications, such as Adobe products, that used to take forever to load now load in seconds.

Originally, I wanted to use the drive for my desktop, but decided to put it into my Macbook Pro just because the drive that came with it always made this constant clicking sound whenever I moved it around. That and I haven't touched the desktop as much lately. I've had no issues with it thus far and it's been about a month now. I didn't use the migration software that came with the product because it was easier to just install a fresh OS and use the migration software that comes with Mac OSX. Took about 3 hours to transfer about 470gb's of data, but I blame that on the USB connection. It was still relatively quick.

I still plan on getting another SSD from Samsung sometime in the future for my desktop just because they've been so great.

Samsung is known for good hardware. I can't comment on this hardware, because I don't have it installed yet. But, the setup and install process is terrible. First, the product was supposed to include SATA data and power cables. The power cable was missing from the package. I intend to use the SSD drive as a replacement for my existing Win8 boot drive. So, the OS needs to be cloned to the SSD. The clone software that was supposed to be provided, was not present on the CD. You have to register the product and download the software. The user manual consists of a few pictures. The SSD Magician; software won't install on a Win 8 system. The cloning software (once downloaded and installed - which took four tries) fails with a numeric error message (Samsung says it works for Win 8.) There doesn't appear to be any way to contact Samsung technical support other than email and they haven't responded to my question about the missing cable. The help document tells you to call a 8xx number which is closed on weekends. I did find another clone software (Drive Clone 9) which seems to be working - but that is another $30 cost. This is not an install for the faint hearted - especially if you want to use the drive as your boot drive - which almost everyone will want to do. If you have the install media, and want to start from scratch, that might work better.

Follow-up Note: I was able to get the drive installed and working. The Samsung Drive Clone software does not work - it consistently fails when trying to clone my C: drive. I purchased a copy of DriveClone 9 from FarStone, and that works perfectly. It took about four hours to clone the drive, but it was done perfectly with no errors. A free 14-day trial of the software is available so you can try it to make sure it works.

I installed this in my late 2011 15" MacBook Pro - Installation was easy peasy lemon squeezy and took perhaps 10 minutes after a ~3 hour migration using the included SATA to USB connector (I had about 200 GB of data.) Startup and shutdown are now much faster, opening programs is very snappy and loading times are much reduced, as is to be expected when upgrading from HDD to SSD. The 500 GB space is fairly roomy, especially since all my iTunes movies and TV shows now live in the cloud instead of on my HD. I'm very pleased with the new drive, and I have never used a computer that is as fast as mine now is. I know there are some qualms about the type of NAND used in the drive, but I'm not a "pro" or IT user, so I think I should be fine through the life of the device. The most important factor in my purchasing this particular drive was the $/GB, which is significantly lower than anything else currently on the market. I'm sure that before long, this situation will change, but the performance/cost ratio hit a sweet spot for me at ~$380 for the 500GB model.

Helpful hints:
If you order this drive, be sure that you have a T6 Torx and 00 Phillips screwdriver on hand or else you're gonna have a bad time. I bought a POS made-in-China combo screwdriver here on Amazon for a few bucks that did the job.

Also, and this is BIG: Beware your MS Office installation. When I cloned my HD, Office 2011 failed to recognize that it had been activated. Since I bought a physical copy and never thought that I'd need it again, I lost it and could not find it. However, after spending some time on the phone with Microsoft Tech support and giving them my order # from the Apple Store, they were kind enough to provide me with a new key without charging me $120 for a new license. Save yourself the hassle and find your key, uninstall Office and do a fresh install after you put in the SSD.

Happy trails!
