Ma Verite,

Absolutly some of the most beautiful music you'll ever hear. It's all in French, but it doesn't matter. All it will do is make you want to learn how to speak French. I was given a tape of a copied CD and had to buy the CD. If you like this one then also get THE FRENCH ALBUM by Celine Dion. Very similiar voices. The music on both is gorgeous....sticks with you and you wind up humming it to yourself all day.

I ordered this CD recently through Amazon.Com. It has everything a fan of Nana Mouskouri like my self would hope for. Fantastic voice and orchestrations and even the words have much meaning. Pour ceux qui parlent le francais...les paroles des chansons sont inclus!

It's all here: style, clarity, feeling, and voice. Mouskouri sings a great variety of songs in her unique style and with her stunningly beautiful voice. Definately an album to buy and to cherish.

Clear, on tone, exciting, "I could swear I've heard that before" (but done not as well). From the first track, I sat enchanted by her voice. Multiple styles are here - even up-beat classical!

Ma Verite is heads above her other CD's. Get this one while you can..... instead of a couple of winner types and the rest uninspired 'fillers', this one is first rate from top to bottom.
By far my favorite!

Chanteuse internationale,
This review is from: Ma Verite (Audio CD)
I always like international, multicultural (are we still allowed to use that word?) hodge podges, so an album by a Greek born singer doing songs in French, except for one bit of vocalese with a SPANISH title should have a certain appeal. Heck, Nana Mouskouri even throws in a French language of an all-American super hit, namely, Cyndi Lauper's "All Through the Night," here recast as "Toute la nuit." And there's a song (still in French, of course) about a kind of bohemian student life in the Eternal City, Rome. So you get a smidgeon of Italia in there too. Is it any wonder Nana Mouskouri enjoys close to worldwide popularity?
It is true that vocally, Nana Mouskouri (esp. en francais) can be a little reminiscent of Celine Dion without the overkill (but, hey, remember who actually came first!). In French that's not a bad thing at all. I'm not an expert, but I'd say she handles the Gallic ballads with greater ease than she does the English or German numbers I've heard her do (not that she mangles the Germanic tongues, exactly, but she seems to slide right into French pop like it was deuxieme nature). But it IS still pop, and a kind of Euro-pop, at that. When I lived in Germany, I was surprised at how popular schmaltz was, not just in that country, but all over the continent. I guess you could tie it in with the European penchant for cheese. Anyway, you get a fair amount of it on this record. Sung quite prettily, but you have to wonder if the French poppification of Wagner's "Bridal Chorus," now turned into "Ma Verite" might not have had the composer spinning in his grave, or wherever he is. But it would be unfair to imply that Nana traffics in excess. She's pretty restrained for the most part. That's the thing about singing in a non-native language. You've got to focus on the text, even more so than you do in your mother tongue. That seems to work well for Nana Mouskouri for the most part. |
