5.0 out of 5 stars A new genera for meAn innovative book that I recommend to every aspiring "Glamour Heroine" out there., June 24, 2005

This review is from: Maahvelous! (Board book)
I am a bit of a book snob, and I have been wary of the increasily large section devoted to graphic novels at my local bookstore. However, after reading Scott Chambliss' "Maahvelous!" I have to re-evaluate some of my hard-lined stances. The over-the-top plotline is engaging and self-deprecating, making it a great read. The main characters, fallen home shopping star Princess Puut and design mogul friend Dali, are both edgy and endearing. I am impressed with Chambliss' bold juxtaposition of images: cartoon characters, phootographic portraiture and high Renaissance sculpture are contained in a single illustration. The eye candy comes in a delightful tongue and cheeck board book design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely and Deliciously MAAHVELOUS!, June 28, 2005
This review is from: Maahvelous! (Board book)
This book is a decadent, sublime visual feast. Scott Chambliss has created a delicious cocktail of exquisitely rendered cartoon characters, and photo collage imagery that is ambrosia for the eyes. The lead characters are endearing, even in their over-the-top existances. Cartoons they may be, but their personalities are fleshed out well enough by this talented author so as to make them likeable and engaging. I can hardly wait for a sequel to this MAAHVELOUS Creation!!! - J. Fernelius

This is the best book I've ever written and illustrated!
And it's also the first book I've ever written and illustrated!
So beware!
What may follow may be even better or even worse!
But in any case,
I'm glad you're here!
And YOU'RE MAAHVELOUS!

Funny, beautiful, informative---and that's just the cover! I can't wait for the sequel! Scott's artistry is superb. And his new "language Italiano" is way cool! This is a winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars Impish fun reveals truth for all., June 30, 2005

After several readings, both fun filled and contemplative, I've come to understand this treat of a tale as an honest instruction about true value in life. While Dali and Puut move through their many adventures in Venice they reveal a dramatic range of attitudes in response to the world and its inhabitants. Attitudes we all share but don't often admit. It's good to have them blasting out from the emotional roller coaster of Puut's private thoughts while making us giggle and swoon along. Dali beams with insight and daring while giving us the thrill of conquest over our lives of restriction. It's all a great release into rejecting the trash of our prisons and embracing the love within our good fortune. Visually stunning, in a very indivualistic style, and repeatedly entertaining with graphic wit and inventive coloration. I think Mr. Chambliss is on to something that just could become a cool-cult hit!

What a delicious, gorgeous and riotous romp! The physical-book itself is a marvel, and the artwork is stunning. I adore the story of The Princess and her pal Dali. The Italian and French word puns are hilarious. All of it makes for a knockout book debut for Mr. Chambliss! FUNISSIMO indeed! Keep em' coming!!

Scott Chambliss has created a fascinating book! The illustrations are remarkable, the characters very likeable, the message of hope, tolerance and acceptance is thoughtfully , yet gently revealed as the story unfolds. A very special book full of humor, warm feelings and soul. In essence, a wonderfully written and well packaged book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Genre: The Glamour Hero!, July 8, 2005
This review is from: Maahvelous! (Board book)
This book is so fun and so innovative that it's a pleasure to see and own. The artwork clearly shows the creative hand of a Hollywood production designer...and finally a "hero" is not cloaked in darkness, but in all the glamour and exitement of international travel. Just a wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Effervescent and Enchanting, July 6, 2005

When a book is created in a way that is entirely original, it is time to give a shout-out to other readers. With diaphanous art and luminous words, "Maavelous!" has pages that seem to be swimming, floating, navigating canal-pierced Venice. Dreams of the land of the doges pull Scott Chambliss's Princess and her soulmate Dali away from L.A.'s realityland to the fanstasyland of Disney's favorite European city. There they find many swirling mysteries and magical answers. It is an artful book you will want to return to over and over to celebrate the joys of travel and friendship.
