5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Upgrade; Powerful Features!

3.0 out of 5 stars Tiger.
Very cool. Sucks? Both are true. Tiger has a VERY nice new look from panther and jaguar. Such as fast-user switching and dashboard. Also it includes an application that has gotten no notarity from apple that is called "Grapher" this application is almost worth 10.4 to some people because it has such a huge varity of graphs that you can build on it, it has a great user...

I upgraded my three Macs (Dual 2.5 GHz G5, 1.67 GHz PowerBook G4, and 800 MHz iBook G3) from Mac OS X 10.3.9. All machines had trouble-free installations and are working perfectly.

Most of the new features are nice, but Spotlight is AMAZING. It has already changed the way I work, and will probably revolutionize the way I use my Macs. Other improvements worth noting include Dashboard (convenient and easy to use), Automator (like Photoshop Actions for Mac OS X!), Smart Folders (in Finder and Mail, really handy!), easier printer setup, support for PDF Forms in Preview, built-in Dictionary/Thesaurus, ....

Nearly every aspect of Mac OS X and nearly every bundled application and utility was improved in some way, though. I am really impressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goodbye Windows, April 30, 2005
This review is from: Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger Family Pack - 5 Client [DVD] [OLD VERSION] (DVD-ROM)
I converted from windows earlier this year and was delighted with Panther. Now I have Tiger and it is fantastic. Spotlight alone is worth the price of the box. These people really have an affinity with the user and know how to make using a computer a pleasurable experience.

I bought the "Family Pack" and so far have installed on two computers -- a 12-inch laptop and a 5-year-old G4. The new system is quite impressive -- I'm very happy with Dashboard already, and this can only become more useful as people come out with more Widgets. Spotlight caused a slowdown for about the first hour after install, as it indexed my hard drives, but this appears to be a one-time issue. Spotlight is amazingly fast at finding information, and the "Smart folders" in Finder will no doubt prove useful in ways I haven't thought of yet.

The only issue I've noticed with the update is that Windows network printing appears to be messed up -- a trip to the Apple discussion boards confirmed that a good number of other people are having the same issues. Thus, if you need to print to a Windows-connected printer on a network, you may want to wait for 10.4.1 or so -- Apple no doubt has a bugfix in the works.

Overall I was very impressed with this new OS. I started on OS 10.1; 10.2 was a good update; 10.3 was probably not worth the price as an update. 10.4 is unhesitatingly worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genuine Upgrade, April 30, 2005

Intallations were simple: I did an Easy install on one computer, and on another, Archive and Install. Easy Install kept integrated everything. With Archive Install, I had to reinstall my Microsoft keyboard and mouse, which took all of 5 minutes. The benefits:
Safari, Mozzila, MSN, and Firefox are on my screen in 5 seconds. Tiger is so much faster than Panther. I like dashboard: with one toggle, I can access a very decent dictionary, my stocks, and calendar, then click on what I've been working on and Dashboard disappears. I've used Spotlight a couple of times and found it much, much easier to find something, although at first it was daunting as it gave so much information. Resolution on iChat is improved, as is Quicktime's video in Tiger. You'll notice the difference. Buying the family pack through Amazon saved 50 bucks. My wife asks is it worth the money? Yes. Should you upgrade? I would recommend it. After all, Mossberg of the WSJ says it's the best thing out there. If you have a PC (I did for 18 years), and are considering a switch, I guarantee you won't go back. Tiger and all the built in and intergrated software will have you wondering why you waited so long.

Very cool. Sucks? Both are true. Tiger has a VERY nice new look from panther and jaguar. Such as fast-user switching and dashboard. Also it includes an application that has gotten no notarity from apple that is called "Grapher" this application is almost worth 10.4 to some people because it has such a huge varity of graphs that you can build on it, it has a great user interface and is well using. But Apple has failed in many ways. It has come up short by adding a ton of bugs. Some features are rather user spfic, such as Automator, this lets you set the computer to do things for you, I would almost never use it, it also includes a app called Voice over I still see no wish to use it at all. The minimized windows have a foggy icon when you look at them. Dashboard is very nice but is a copy of konfabulator- a 3rd party application that came up with the idea first. Mind you by the time you read this Apple may have released updates that remove the bugs but I would highly sugest going to macmod.com and viewing this- http://macmod.com/index.php?option=com_simpleboard&func=view&catid=17&id=4515
-It has reviews by a number of mac owners and goes greatly in depth. I sugest that if apple has not yet released a update by the time you think about buying this, don't waste your money yet. It is great looking, but unless you want to deal with really annoying bugs then it isn't worth destroying 10.2 or 10.3 os with.
-Also 10.4 is easy to install and updates with ease, if you are running 10.1 or 10.0 GET tiger. Otherwise wait for an update (sorry for being such a broken record)
-If you've already bought it or are thinking about getting it, don't worrie once apple works out the annoying bugs this will be by far the best OS they have ever had.

3.0 out of 5 stars If you're stuck on Panther and can't use Leopard get Tiger, October 4, 2009

I have a lot of computers and the family pack is the only way to go. Tiger was a solid release, and it is what my main desktop is still running for development reasons. No complaints. Would like TimeMachine from Leopard though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Say goodbye to computer headaches, January 26, 2006
By
This review is from: Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger Family Pack - 5 Client [DVD] [OLD VERSION] (DVD-ROM)
I've never lost any files on my computer. I can't remember the last time Tiger crashed on any of my 4 computers. I've never had a virus or spyware. I've never had to reformat my hard drive. No one has ever hacked any of my networked pooters.

A lot of this is because of my computer background. But I rarely need to call on that background. Tiger is fast and I don't have to fuss with it unless I'm bored.

I decided to write a review after I noticed two reviewers (DOPES!) chose to give the OS one star, not because there's a problem with the OS, but because they didn't get theirs yet (WAAA).
I bought the family pack because I have four computers to update. The upgrade was a snap on all four machines. And this is a great operating system. I especially like spot light, it makes finding anything on your computer a piece of cake. They have also enhanced the creation of pdf files which I use a lot to store email and web pages. I think that at least in my case I'm noticing a speed increase.
And now we know that this OS has been designed to run on an Intel chip as well as the IBM chip. So don't worry, be happy and get this upgrade.
