Editorial Reviews

Valedictorian hopeful, Devin Overstreet (Wiz Khalifa) struggles to pen his graduation speech when it becomes clear that all his academic overachievements have left him with little to no life experiences. He finds an unlikely inspiration in Mac Johnson, (Snoop Dogg) the least achieving student on campus.

Mac, a 10-year senior and consummate ladies man, is smitten by the school's new substitute chemistry teacher. He soon realizes that the only way he'll truly have a chance with her is if he finally graduates high school.

In 3 weeks time, Mac must cram four years of high school academics, and Devin must cram four years of teenage experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Over the Top at Times, But Compelling Enough... January 12, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
It was every easy for one to think that Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa's preliminary single "Young, Wild & Free" featuring Bruno Mars was a bit too good to be true in regards to the quality of Mac And Devin Go To High School (Music From And Inspired By The Movie) [Explicit]. While that pre-judgement was popular opinion about an album centered around marijuana, the final product of the soundtrack/hip-hop album is actually solid. Easily better than Snoop's 2011 solo effort Doggumentary [Explicit] if nothing else, Mac and Devin Go to High School is much more satisfactory than expected. Snoop Dogg takes on the role of "Mac" while Wiz Khalifa assumes the role of "Devin." Wiz and Snoop are also a strong pairing with Snoop's more understated, laid-back rhyming style contrasting the more robust, fast-paced flow of Wiz Khalifa. Differences aside, the common ground for both is their love for marijuana and their rhymes definitely support that assertion.

"Smokin' On," featuring Juicy J, opens the album mysteriously, giving off an air of being `stoned.' The allusions never stop flowing about marijuana, as might be expected. The hook is mostly performed by Wiz in quasi-sung manner with Snoop joining in on the second half of the hook. Juicy J handles the third verse, following verse by Wiz and Snoop. "I Get Lifted" is the more captivating cut, featuring a nice lush nature about the production with an extremely laid back feel. The featured female vocalist handles her hook strongly, delivering the knockout punch on this standout: "I'm just soaking up this breeze, smoking on some trees/smoking on this weed this is all I need...

4.0 out of 5 stars Mac & Dev Review December 13, 2011
By Asim
Format:MP3 Music
This is a decent album, and I feel as if it does what it's supposed to do. The project is full of "weed raps" and well produced songs, all of which are very Wiz Khalifa & Snoop Dogg. Good Collaboration and I'm not too much of a fan of either.

3.0 out of 5 stars Veteran, young rapper collaberate on album July 2, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Collaborations seem to be popular these days.

First with Jay-Z and Kanye West, and now Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa have joined forces.

Snoop and Wiz teamed together to create the soundtrack "Mac and Devin Go to High School."

The interesting thing about this project is Snoop is working on directing a movie project that goes along with the soundtrack.

Usually the movie is released with the soundtrack but this time they decided to release it before the movie came out.

The promotion for this album was slim to none at least in the U.S., so most people might not have heard it was coming out.

Snoop and Wiz sure are an interesting combination due to both of their backgrounds. Snoop Dogg is a hip-hop icon and mogul, and Wiz may be the quickest up-and-coming star.

The best element of this collaboration is that it is not over the top.

The CD contains 12 tracks altogether and just flows really well.

The track that probably stands out the most on this CD is "Young Wild & Free" featuring Bruno Mars.

Even though this was the commercial single for the album it is up there for one of the best tracks on the album.

"Smokin' On" featuring Juicy J kicks off the CD as the best song on the album.

Snoop and Wiz certainly like to chill a lot so the vibe on this track really flows well.

It makes you believe what they're rapping about, and is another fun song to just kick it with your friends.

One of the things that holds down the album is some of the production.

For example on the song "6:30," there is so much wrong with this song production-wise.

Man when I first heard that Snoop and Wiz were doing a colabo album, I immediately circled the release date on my calandar. Of course I was a little skeptical with Wiz after a slightly dissapointing Rolling Papers [Explicit], because of the simple fact that he went a little soft on his first major label release. Trust me, he was borderline to losing a fan all because of that album. Snoop has been consistant with an excellent Doggumentary Music [Explicit], and of course we had a little preview of their colab with "This Weed Iz Mine". With all that said, I still purchased the album the day it was released.

The strange thing about this album is that it is made as a soundtrack to the movie with the same name that has not been released yet for some strange reason. The major topic of this album: Weed, marijuana, etc. Basically if you don't like redundant subject matter, you might want to avoid this album. Their first single "Young, Wild, & Free" pretty much sums up the whole album topic wise. Production wise ranges from above average to great. Warren G. lays down a hot beat on "I Get Lifted" giving that famous Cali vibe. Other standout songs included are "Talent Show", "Smokin On", and "French Inhale".

I really was going to write this off as a failed colaboration, but after listening to it a few times it kinda grew on me. Stretching the topic out over 12 tracks, it might get a little boring to some people (especially non-smokers). As for musical purposes, its not that bad. Peace.
