Product Description

Size: 10-1/2-Inch

At 10.5" this honing rod polishes your knives smooth. It features a medium surface of approximately 2000 grit. The black ceramic is a new ceramic that is much durable than traditional white ceramic. The surface will realign edges quickly and work better on Japanese cutlery which tend to be harder. These rods are meant to hone a knives edge. Use it regularly at home to maintain a fine edge. Does not replace sharpening.

I've always liked products from MAC especially their knives.

This ceramic hone measures Rockwell 81 in hardness, so it has no trouble refining the edge of the hardest steel knife.

All can help get knives sharp but the Mac takes a good blade to razor sharp with just a few strokes.

I've used many honing rods over the years, and this is by far the best. A honing rod has to be harder than than the knife it's honing or it won't work. Most steel rods are around Rockwell 60, and are thus ineffective on some Japanese knives that can be as hard as 62. This ceramic hone measures Rockwell 81 in hardness, so it has no trouble refining the edge of the hardest steel knife. This won't make a dull knife sharp, but it will make a sharp knife sing.

I ordered it from M. V. TRADING and that was a BIG MISTAKE! When I first got it, I took my cheap and totally dull Cuisinart Santoku, took 3 (alternating) swipes on each side and the knife was as sharp as on the day I brought it! So, it works, and very well at that. I didn't get to use it on my more expensive Wusthof knives, though, because I noticed that the rod has a manufacturing defect. The rubber washer that sits between the rod and the handle was not properly seated- it was totally crushed on one side and protruding far out on the other. I contacted M.V. Trading and, at their request, sent them a series of photos. They agreed to replace it with another, and processed a Shipping Label to return the defective rod. So far so good. I received the new replacement from M.V. TRADING today and to, my great surprise, I realized that it was the same part that I had returned to them. I know this for two reasons: One, the replacement rod they sent me has the same defect, exact in every little detail. Remember, I studied the defect in great detail earlier and photographed it from all possible angles, and I know without a shadow of a doubt that it's the same part. The other telling fact was that the instructions leaflet was missing from the box that the rod is packaged in from MAC. You see, I had taken out the instructions leaflet from the first box and had forgotten to put it back in when I returned it to the seller for replacement. So, it looks like M. V. Trading simply took my return, threw it in one of those plastic mailing bags- right, not even a shipping box to keep the rod safe- and mailed it back to me. I contacted M. V. Trading. They blatantly lied and told me that they had sent me a new replacement.Read more ›

Let me start off by saying that I am a professional cook, not a chef so my equipment requires high durability and functionality. This honing rod is made of a very fine ceramic unlike white ceramic honing rods which I find remove to much steel and seem to sharpen rather than hone. This honing rod has worked great on all my knives, especially my japanese knives. I love the grooved sides as well as the smooth sides. Being made of ceramic, one would think that this rod would be fairly easy to break but it has held up very well to being transported to and from work and being used multiple times per shift on various knives with excellent results every time. The title says it all, best honing rod I have ever used and worth the high price tag in my opinion. May not be necesarry for the home cook who hones there knife once a week or once a year for that matter but for the guy who is dicing, julienning, and cutting rounds of onions daily it will stand your edge back up nicely especially on knives made of very hard steel.

This is by far the best honing rod I've owned to date. The steel has an hrc of above 80, making it tougher than any metal currently being used to produce cutlery today. One thing though, what's with the plastic tip? When honing I tend to nick this completely "un-flush" component. This makes it less pretty. Not a huge problem, however, very irritating. Revamp and give me a finished product with no tip and it would be perfect. I still give it 5 star status regardless. Buy this.

This hone is hard enough to straighten very hard steel, which is a necessity to keep knives in good cutting order between sharpening. It's also hard enough and fine enough to put a fine finish on an already sharp knife. As others have mentioned, it won't do much for a dull knife, but it will nicely polish the edge on a sharp knife.

This is a very nice honing rod I bought for honing my Mac 8" chefs knife. One minor complaint is that if using it free hand the knife blade can get hung up on the rubber tip. Thus the reason for 4 stars. I think I would prefer it without the rubber tip. The rubber tip is for anchoring the honing rod in a vertical position on a cutting board.

I wish the handle wasn't plastic. Not sure why everyone complains about the rubber tip as it seems to protect the integrity of the rod better.

After reading other's reivews about this, I decided to try it. It does have a rubber tip, but it does not get in the way at all. I like having the protective metal area at the base of the round sharpening area that keeps you safe from sharp knives. I used this even with my cheaper paring knives and it works great...now i just have to remember, oh crap they are so sharp they cut my fingers easily!
