been waiting a long time for this one,

when I first heard this cd it was in the late seventies on L.P. and I was hooked. As much as the music is brilliant and there is a wide subject range the lyrics were what struck me. Mac could say things in a song that I could never imagine finding the words for. Its a crazy world was the first song i had heard but it was Barney and Real people that struck a chord the most. People call me Jesus is as honest a look at life and people that there is . I am a writer and and this was probably the album that turned me and gave me inspiration more than any other. On most of these songs you will think of people and situations in your own life and relate; it is that well written and performed. Mac has never received the recognition he truly deserves as a writer and a musician but this CD started my appreciation of him and his brilliance. Turn the lights down, light a candle with your favorite person and enjoy a mellow and truly awesome cd. DARREN SEGUIN

After years of mediocre, commercial Mac we finally get a CD re-release of the real deal. Real People, Samuel Arisin' and, most of all, Barney are genuinely good music rivaling (at that time) Bat McGrath, Randy Newman, John Stewart, Buffett and Bob Martin as top singer-songwriter talent. Lots of Mac's later stuff was a bit contrived or made with Nashville in mind. But this album is exceptional. Thanks to whomever for getting it back out on CD - shame there weren't any bonus tracks from this era.

LONG wait for this to come out on CD,

I've been a fan of Mac's since I first heard him in the 70s (on WZZQ in Jackson, MS), and have made it a point to see him in person whenever possible. This album is his most original. Live audiences seem to love Barney best, but Alive is one of my favorites, and Samuel Arisin' gets everyone up and singing along. His guitar playing is pure and perfect. Definitely a must-have for any fan of Jimmy Buffet, James Taylor, or Sawyer Brown (who he produces).

I was ecstatic to hear that this (along with Mac's second album, "No Problem Here") was FINALLY being released on cd. This is without a doubt one of the finest recording ever released, and it's a shame more people don't know about it. Listening to this is like visiting an old friend; it's warm, engaging, thought provoking, and you simply can never get enough. Do yourself a favor and get this cd.

I saw Mac in 1977 and have been a fan ever since. It's great that this album is finally on CD! I wore out my cassette tape. He's a marvelous musician and arranger. His music is memorable, singable, delightful. The lyrics are honest, and often witty. He's able to convey his grasp of our southern way of life so beautifully, it almost hurts. If you love this, be sure to try the others. Listen for his incredible guitar on all his work, and in Jimmy Buffet's music, too, since he is a Coral Reefer now. When the harmonies are perfect on a Jimmy Buffet record, it's Mac's voice that makes it so.

Absolutely one of the finest albums ever produced!,

Like the other reviewers of this album, the songs on this album (and Mac's other albums) are some of the most thought provoking songs you will ever hear. His mastery of putting into words thoughts and ideas of every day life is incredible. Add to this the excellent music and this is absolutely one of the finest albums ever produced!

The fact that I found this great CD at the Dollar Tree may not be a good sign for Mac, but it does add another of his great sets to my collection. This one sparkles with MacAnally's usual charm. "Bad Boy" has such great energy and banter. "People Call Me Jesus" is a real treasure that builds with its tongue-in-cheek lyric until climaxing at the end with the point, "Someday they'll know that all I am is love." The songs on this self-titled set are consistently strong with Mac's excellent songwriting. Don't let this one slip by! Enjoy!

Its a crazy world--best song around,

The song It's a crazy world about says it all if today's day and age---Mac is just plain and simply a master singer - songwriter; the only other comparable to him in my humble opinion is Gordon Lightfoot. Mac, many kudos on a terrific CD.

Where's "Over the Rainbow"?,
By
This review is from: Mac Mcanally (Audio CD)
My Dad first turned me on to this cd, even though it was the album to begin with. Mac's music is very down to earth, and truthful. I haven't listened to the cd, but would like to know what happened to the last track on the album, "Over the Rainbow". Is it on the cd, and if not, what happened?

All of Mac's press says he is a born storyteller and everyone
knows that is true. But the production and arrangements by Terry Woodford and Clayton Ivey help get his message across in his early songs so well--they make sure you get the story he tells in every song. |
