Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Mac OS 9 may be a minor upgrade from version 8.6, but that doesn't mean you don't need a detailed guide to help you get the most out of it. The Mac OS 9 Guide is a thorough and well-organized manual that tackles all of the intricacies involved in Apple's latest operating system.

Brad Miser first orients you with the Mac OS 9 desktop, straightforwardly guiding you in working with file menus, the Apple Finder, and the control strip. He also does an admirable job of detailing OS 9's newest features, including the Sherlock meta-search tool and the AirPort wireless networking tool.

Miser is at his best, however, when discussing more complex issues, such as how to manage and customize your Mac, offering helpful tips on increasing available memory, partitioning a hard drive, and managing your system folder, for example. He also clearly knows the inner workings of the Mac OS and dispenses advice with great clarity and brevity. His troubleshooting tips are helpful as well, though he has a tendency to make you feel like you're to blame for any problems.

The Mac OS 9 Guide is rather gray and text-heavy--a bit ironic, given OS 9's highly graphical nature. Also, Miser's prose can be as dry as a Texas wind, leaning toward a textbook style. Nonetheless, this is a comprehensive guide to the Mac OS 9, one that will have Mac users working beyond the surface of their machines. --John Frederick Moore
