5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Leopard
The Mac OS X Leopard Bible is simply the best book available on Mac OS 10.5. Yes, it's better than Pogue's Missing Manual; the Bible is far more comprehensive, with more detailed information, and is therefore more useful in the real world.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Leopard, April 17, 2008

El Nath (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mac OS X Leopard Bible (Paperback)
The Mac OS X Leopard Bible is simply the best book available on Mac OS 10.5. Yes, it's better than Pogue's Missing Manual; the Bible is far more comprehensive, with more detailed information, and is therefore more useful in the real world.

As a computer consultant specializing in Macs, I'm a Mac expert, but no one can know everything. I often have to find fast answers to questions that come up in the course of troubleshooting Macs for my clients, so I own pretty much every book on Leopard. This is the one I reach for first, because I have found it the most likely to have the answer I'm looking for. Maybe because it is written by New York-based Mac consultants who understand how Macs are used in the real world, by both home users and in the business world. So, to me, the scope and content of this book is superior.

I find the writing style in this book to be direct, clear, and concise. I become impatient with Pogue's more conversational style, which some may prefer. But who reads one of these books cover-to-cover? Mostly, these are reference books you dive into to look something up, or maybe read a section to gain an overview, or to find a procedure to follow; the Bible seems designed to get you to what you need FAST. And despite the technical subject, it's quite readable, with light touches of subtle humor here and there.

I noticed a few reviews here that complain this book has thin paper, light printing, small fonts. These comments seem like weird nit-picks to me. This book offers a VAST amount of information -- much more than Pogue's book -- for the same price. To achieve this, I guess the publisher made some adjustments that might be unpopular with the more aesthetically sensitive. I say, look beyond these things -- this is a technical book, not a coffee-table book. The Bible is the best value for your money, and the content is unsurpassed.

This Book is a must have for any Mac user. It is well written, easy to follow and yet very comprehensive. I recently had an issue with my Macbook, and was able to quickly find the solution in the book. It saved me hours , not having to call Mac support.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality, March 6, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mac OS X Leopard Bible (Paperback)
I have bought the Mac OS Bibles for many years. I am very disappointed with the Leopard version. The information is the same great stuff as it has always had. But somewhere along the line, someone decided to take some of the quality out of the book itself. The paper is thinner, lower quality than previous editions. The font size on the pages is much smaller and the color of the print is very light. Some chapter titles have the same dark black, but every level of text below that gets lighter and lighter in color. The lack of contrast between the print and the pages makes this edition very hard to read. It's too bad because I have recommended the Bible series for years, but this edition just doesn't deserve the kudos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great coverage of Apple's newest OS., April 24, 2008
By
This review is from: Mac OS X Leopard Bible (Paperback)
As with any good guide or informative book, Sam Litt and coauthors start with basics and work their way up. Yes, it is a big book because there is a lot to know. Leopard is the biggest update to Apple's operating system in a long time, so there was plenty of ground to cover. The authors were very extensive and covered whatever you would need to know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about Leopard, August 24, 2008
This review is from: Mac OS X Leopard Bible (Paperback)
This book is amazing. I bought MacBook 3 months ago - as well as a couple of my friends and I've been the only one who bought Mac OS X Leopard Bible as well. I must say my skills with OS X are increasing really fast and I teach the other guys how to do tasks they don't know.

It's really a helpful book. I've never seen another manuals for Leopard but this one is very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank You!, April 16, 2008
This review is from: Mac OS X Leopard Bible (Paperback)
I would like to thank Sam Litt and co-authors for writing another Mac OSX Bible. I have purchased all Mac OSX Bibles prior to Leopard and was looking forward to this release. I feel this book gives me an in-depth view of Leopard and I continue to reference this book to find out about Leopards new features. If you are new user or a veteran to the Mac, you will feel the same way I do when it comes to a well written book. This version like previous versions of the Mac OSX Bible gets right to the point from beginning to end. I will continue to buy books that are written by Sam Litt, so keep them coming.
