2.0 out of 5 stars Can't find things in the index...
A great book, but it's difficult to find things using its index... the page numbers in the index are not correct, sometimes they are 10's of pages off! I can't give this many stars because of that. Sorry. I've spent hours trying to find what I'm looking for because of this.

This review is from: Mac OS X Snow Leopard Pocket Guide: The Ultimate Quick Guide to Mac OS X (Pocket ref / guide) (Paperback)
Mac OS X Snow Leopard Pocket Guide is as advertised a great guide that is conveniently small to Snow Leopard and its new features. It opens with a quick guide to what is new in Snow Leopard including a new feature in Preview to import images through a scanner. Combining that with improved sharing and we now can, I hope, use our scanner with both of our iMac and our MacBook.

Chapter 2 is provides more information than unsophisticated users need about installing Snow Leopard and migrating data to it.

Chapter 3 is a quick guide to Snow Leopard itself beginning with the Menu bar. Services under the Apple Menu has been redone in Snow Leopard. When you have a new application to drag to the Applications file, just drag it to Applications in the Side Bar. Click and hold on any open application in the Dock to display all the open windows for that application. There is a lot of information that is new in this little book as well as reminders of features I forget to use such as command-tab.

Chapter 4 is a quick guide to troubleshooting the more common problems. Chapter 5 covers what is new and what you want to know about the System Preferences including Sharing. Chapter 6 includes some information about each of the many applications and utilities that come with Snow Leopard. Chapter 7 is about MobileMe which is useful only if you have MobileMe. Chapter 8 is primarily about passwords which I believe is all most people really need to know about Security on a Mac except for using some common sense. The final chapter 9 includes the keyboard commands and how to access the special characters - very useful information in a easy to use format.

This book provides a look at what is new in Leopard and a concise reference for information when you need it. A lot of book in a compact package for a small price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise, Useful, Clear, November 21, 2009

Has all the essentials. Not as comprehensive as the The Missing Manual, but that's too big to read through. This book is great for anyone new to Mac as a thorough introduction and is great for anyone except a Mac expert for a quick reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pocket Guide for Snow Leopard, October 25, 2009

A well written concise guide explains the main features of Mac OS X Snow Leopard clearly, logically and quickly. I keep a copy in both cars to read while waiting at appointments. 219 narrow pages gets to the point quicker than the usual 1000 pages. Inexpensive and great for starters. Get one with other orders to get over the Amazon $25 free shipping limit! A handy gift for Mac friends.

3.0 out of 5 stars Handy Introduction & Reference Guide, February 1, 2010
This review is from: Mac OS X Snow Leopard Pocket Guide: The Ultimate Quick Guide to Mac OS X (Pocket ref / guide) (Paperback)
I just finished reading this from cover to cover. I would have to say, it is probably the best introduction book I have read to any version of Mac OS X.

Pro's:
It's size - packed full of information, yet not overwhelming.
Great reference for those new to the Mac.
Great keyboard shortcut reference for anyone who uses a Mac.

Con's:
Typo's, and I mean I stopped counting after 50!
Grammatical error's! Enough of them to annoy you!
Technical error's, however nothing not easily figured out on your own.

All in all, it's a great introduction read for anyone new to the Mac!
I would have given it 5-Stars, had it not been for the laziness exhibited by the editors!

This little book paid for itself the first time I opened it. It has earned itself a space on my desk beside my Mac.

Hi

It a nice book especially if your (as me) are comming form the MS Vista (nightmare) OS. I am new to the Mac OS X, at the small book helped me a lot. Beware it is by no means a manual (lack of details etc.). Easy to carry with you and your MacBook Pro :-)

3.0 out of 5 stars A good, succinct introduction, November 18, 2009
This review is from: Mac OS X Snow Leopard Pocket Guide: The Ultimate Quick Guide to Mac OS X (Pocket ref / guide) (Paperback)
I purchased the pocket guide as an ebook via the iTunes App Store for $1.99. After skimming it, I realized it is useful as introductory material. But, I still purchased David Pogue's OS X Snow Leopard: The Missing Manual for more thorough information last night. I will finish the pocket guide before starting the big book, and, keep it on my iPhone as a quick reference. If you don't read ebooks, I would consider it worthwhile to purchase this book in paperback to get an overview of Snow Leopard.

Great little reference book. You can learn much by just glancing through the pages. If you're a Mac user, it's the little bit extra you need for all the new secrets in Snow Leopard.

3.0 out of 5 stars A fair guide to the OS, November 6, 2009

This review is from: Mac OS X Snow Leopard Pocket Guide: The Ultimate Quick Guide to Mac OS X (Pocket ref / guide) (Paperback)
The book describes many features of OS 10.6 in considerable detail, but skips others entirely. In addition, I found several operational errors in the descriptions. There are better books out there that provide a more complete description of the product in more detail and better accuracy.
