Take the good with the bad,
By V-ROD "Bookworm" (Phoenix, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: MacArthur and the American Century: A Reader (Hardcover)
This book contains short essays written by various people who offer their analysis of Gen. Douglas MacArthur. The book offers a few speeches that MacArthur gave, and are a pleasure to see them in written form. There is about a 50/50 mix of praise and criticism for MacArthur. I have a real problem with some of these essays that are written by liberal authors or professors who think they could have done a better job, or by making MacArthur look like a good for nothing private. They have the right to their opinion, but in my mind he saved thousands of American lives because of his brilliant leadership.
The best part of this book are the essays that are written by those who were with him during the war. George Kenney (MacArthur's air commander)offers an excellent expose on MacArthur. It was probably the best analysis I've seen written about not only MacArthur the General, but also the man himself. People can say what they will; love him or hate him, but all I know is I'm glad he was on our side! |
