Book Description

October 9, 1994 Macarthur New Testament Commentary Serie
These study guides, part of a set from noted Bible scholar, John MacArthur, take readers on a journey through biblical texts to discover what lies beneath the surface, focusing on meaning and context, and then reflecting on the explored passage or concept. With probing questions that guide the reader toward application, The MacArthur Bible Studies are invaluable tools for Bible students of all ages. The book of Acts is the first volume of church history. It records the story of the church from its explosive beginning on the Day of Pentecost to the imprisonment at Rome of its greatest missionary. During those three decades, the church expanded from a small group of Jewish believers gathered in Jerusalem to embrace thousands in dozens of congregations throughout the Roman world. Acts describes how the Spirit of God superintended, controlled, and empowered the expansion of the church. Although a work of history, not theology, Acts nevertheless emphasizes the doctrinal truths concerning salvation, the work and person of the Holy Spirit, and other theological issues. Join John MacArthur as he searches the pages of the book of Acts to uncover the intricacies of God's Word spoken to His people.

From the Inside Flap

Acts 1-12

The book of Acts is the first volume of church history.  It connects the early church to the ministry of Jesus, and provides the backdrop for the New Testament epistles.  The book's focus on cross-cultural evangelism and the spread of the gospel makes studying Acts a must for any believer who is serious about living out the Great Commission.

Join John MacArthur as he explains each verse in a way that is both doctrinally precise and intensely practical.

The MacArthur New Testament Commentary series comes from the experience, wisdom, and insight of one of the most trusted ministry leaders and Bible scholars of our day.  Each volume was written to be as comprehensive and accurate as possible, dealing thoroughly with every key phrase and word in the Scripture without being unnecessarily technical.  This commentary will help to give a better, fuller, richer understanding of God's Word, while challenging the reader to a vibrant personal spiritual walk.

From the Back Cover

Unleashing God's Truth one verse at a time

"Clear, reasonable, understandable, devout-all things and more can be honestly said about this generation's greatest single-author pastoral commentary set. The MacArthur New Testament Commentary series is a help to Christians and preachers. Forged in the study, fired in the pulpit, these comments on the whole New Testament are a gift from one who loves Christ, given to Christ's bride, the church."
-Mark Denver, pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, D.C.

"Dr. MacArthur's love for the Scripture and his many years of diligent study have resulted in a resource that is a great gift to the Body of Christ. I have found this tool to be a great help as I study the Word and teach it to women. I often refer to this set of commentaries to enhance my understanding of the text and to shed light on difficult passages and questions."
-Nancy Leigh DeMoss, author, Revive our Hearts radio teacher

"John MacArthur has provided a compelling example of pastoral ministry based on the Word of God. Now the fruit of that ministry is available to us all: careful attention to the text of Scripture and faithful theological exposition, all in the service of the church of Jesus Christ. Both pastor and layperson will benefit for years to come from this unique commentary series."
-C.J. Mahaney, president of Sovereign Grace Ministries

"The MacArthur New Testament Commentary is nothing less than a library of faithful exegesis and exposition. This project is unparalleled in our times, and John MacArthur has produced a masterful commentary series that demands attention and deserves a place in every preacher's library."
-R. Albert Mohler, Jr., PhD, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Work on Acts, May 17, 2004
This review is from: Acts 1-12 MacArthur New Testament Commentary (Macarthur New Testament Commentary Serie) (Hardcover)
Like him or not, Dr. John MacArthur always preaches what he believes and never waters it down. His firm foundation in the Bible allows him to teach with authority (Matthew 7:28). MacArthur does so in his continuing commentaries on the New Testament with this volume on Acts 1-12.

MacArthur does deal with the hard issues. For example, he deals with the baptism with the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 and offers his view (a cessationist view with a view toward conversion-initation; see James Dunn's BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT). He does deal with miracles and manifesation gifts where needed from his text. MacArthur will not write what is popular nor will he debate an issus not found in the text he is dealing with.

I do highly recommend this volume on the book of Acts as well as the companion second volume of Acts 13-28. Both offer useful outlines for teachers of Scripture and both give great evangelical commentary as well as historical, grammatical, and application from the powerful book of Acts.

5.0 out of 5 stars not very deep, July 16, 2001
This review is from: Acts 1-12 MacArthur New Testament Commentary (Macarthur New Testament Commentary Serie) (Hardcover)
MacArthur's book is more devotional than anything else. Not a serious commentary.
