2.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't make myself finish it...
It started off okay, but I just couldn't get into the sheer number of ghosts that were written in as secondary characters, as they were starting to annoy me. I just wanted them to shut up and go away. The author even wrote one of the ghosts as a possible love interest of the heroine, besides the human one, and that just turned me off. I made it about half way through, but...

4.0 out of 5 stars fun paranormal romance, February 3, 2009
This review is from: MacGowan's Ghost (Mass Market Paperback)
Allie Morgan is a for hire ghostbuster who is proud of liberating spirits so that they can move on. Her current client takes her from the States, her last job being in Raleigh, to the Northwest coast of Scotland. Odin's Thumb Inn and Pub is loaded with irritating ghosts.

However this assignment in Sealladh na Mara is different than any she previously performed. She quickly learns that every resident can communicate with the ghosts, which makes her realize she is not as unique as she thought, but also wonders why her customer the pub owner Gabe MacGowan needs an outsider like her; to do so he must sell the pub; to sell the pub he must rid it of its otherworldly infestation including his late wife. Neither Jake nor the ghosts want to leave their home, so they have teamed up to drive potential buyers away. However, Allie is attracted to the gloomy Gabe and likes his sons and the lively spirits so instead of driving them out, she joins their side hoping to understand what is disturbing her client's soul.

This is a fun paranormal romance starring a likable heroine, a Grinch of a male lead, and a fine cast of ghosts who play matchmaker along with his son. The story line is lighthearted fun while also digging deep into relationships even with those beyond the grave; especially Gabe's late wife. Fans will enjoy this enchanting romantic fantasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book from Cindy Miles, February 3, 2009
This review is from: MacGowan's Ghost (Mass Market Paperback)
I've read each of Cindy Miles' previous releases, starting with SPIRITED AWAY. She writes the kind of heroes and heroines (and ghosts!) I adore. I don't want to spoil things, but the set up for this story is a little different than Miles' previous books, but still within the "world" that she writes so well. Readers will not be disappointed! Gabe is a bit darker, and more complex than her previous heroes, but the endearing Allie is the perfect woman to turn his life around. The attraction between them is electric, and the love story completely satisfying. Cindy Miles gets better and better with each book! This one goes on my keeper shelf with her others.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun and enjoyable read, March 29, 2011
This review is from: MacGowan's Ghost (Mass Market Paperback)
Gabe MacGowan grew up with the ghosts that now haunt his pub. They are baffled why he would want to leave them, and hurt that he would do so. Allie Morgan died when she was younger, and when she was revived, she could see ghosts. She's made it into her life's work. Now she is hired for the job of a lifetime.

Allie Morgan can see dead people. She is hired by many to oust the spirits that haunt their homes. Usually, she talks to the spirits and does some research about them. Once she finds out why they are haunting, she tries to solve the problem. Allie loves her job, and she is good at it. She soon finds herself taking her first international job in Scotland to oust the spirits of a pub, Odin's Thumb.

Gabe MacGowan is the proprietor of Odin's Thumb Inn and Pub in a Scottish village and he has hired Allie to oust the spirits that live there. They keep scaring away potential buyers. He is determined to sell the pub so he and his son Jake can move. Not only for a more stable environment for his son, but also to escape the ghosts that haunt him, particularly his dead wife.

Allie falls in love with the Pub and its ghost's very quickly. She is determined to break the hard shell Gabe has enclosed himself in, as well as try to keep her own heart from getting broken. Gabe is scared to unleash his horrific burden on Allie, even though her very presence ignites feelings in him he hasn't felt in a long while. Between the two of them, sparks fly and emotions run deep.

A beautiful Scottish background, ghosts who are full of character, and witty prose make this a fun and enjoyable read. With a splash of romance, gut-wrenching emotion, and a solid plot, MACGOWAN'S GHOST is wonderful to read while catching some rays or curled up in front of the fire.

4.0 out of 5 stars First time reading this author, but certainly not the last!, October 25, 2009

This review is from: MacGowan's Ghost (Mass Market Paperback)
I love books such as this one. Light, with some nice heart-tugging scenes. Allie Morgan is an American and a ghost ouster. She helps people rid themselves of those pesky specters. Gabe MacGowen is the owner of the Odin's Thumb pub in Scotland. He has a pack of pesky ghosts he needs quieted in order to sell his pub. So after browsing the internet, he contacts Allie to do the job.

Allie accepts and finds herself in the rugged, beautiful country of Scotland, situated in a small coastal town that Allie learns has an uncanny way of attracting ghosts. But once she gets there she soon discovers that it's not the band of ghosts she needs to worry about but a ghost more evil and malevolent than she's ever experienced before. The ghost of Gabe's dead wife, Kait.

I thought this was a very light and sweetly sensual tale of ghosts, and the healing power of love. There was a touch of silliness along with a dash of creepiness at the end.

This review is from: MacGowan's Ghost (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the first book I have read by Cindy Miles and I have since ordered all of her books. MaGowan's Ghost is pure whimsy and I LOVED IT! The characters are charming, the story is fresh and exciting and I had a hard time putting this book down and hated to see it come to an end (even though the ending is wonderful). Hats off to Cindy Miles for creating a story that is pure entertainment and I think the mystery, humor & romance, with a few quirky (& mostly) likable ghosts thrown in the mix is just the best for a fun, enchanting get-a-way read. I am so glad I bought this book and can't wait for more. Hats off to Cindy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner!, June 7, 2009

This review is from: MacGowan's Ghost (Mass Market Paperback)
Allie Morgan has a job to do and that is to oust the Odin's Thumb Inn and Pub's mischievous ghosts. Of course, that's not really what this paranormal investigator does. Nope. Allie's main goal when working a job is to find out what's bothering the ghosts and figure out a way to put them at ease. When she arrives in the seaside town of Sealladh na Mara on the Northwest Coast of Scotland, she quickly finds it isn't the ghosts who need her expertise but the sexy Scotsman, Gabe MacGowan. This is a task only Allie can help with, but will the price she has to pay be too high? Is she willing to lose her life as well as her heart for this man?

Gabe MacGowan only wants what's best for his six-year-old son, Jake, and growing up with a group of quirky ghosts just isn't going to fit that bill no matter how much the boy protests. With this resolve, Gabe sets his sights on selling the family Pub and Inn and moving some place where his son can have a normal life. Problem is that isn't going to happen if the ghosts have anything to say about it. After they run off all the potential buyers, Gabe enlists the help of the fun-loving American, Allie Morgan. Little does he know that he's about to lose not only the battle, but his heart as well. When the real reason he wants to leave his family home begins to threaten everything he cares about, Gabe realizes he has to let Allie go in order to save her life. Will his chivalry and sacrifice work? And can he rid himself of the nightmares haunting him from his past mistakes?

~~~~~
Cindy Miles is one of the authors at the top of my favorites list. When I find out one of her books will soon be released, I write the date down on every calendar I own. From the very first book I read, Spirited Away, I was addicted to the quirky ghosts and unconventional love stories that Ms. Miles has a talented knack for writing. I never would have dreamed of some of the relationships she has created, but after reading her story, they seem as natural as air.
MacGowan's Ghost is a continuation of the previous four books with the addition of some favorite characters from past stories, but it can also be read as a standalone book. The fun-loving character of Allie Morgan is easy to relate to and the positive type of person I strive to be every day of my life. Gabe MacGowan is sexy, irresistible and tugged at my heartstrings with his undying love for his son. The chemistry between the two characters is thick enough you could cut it with a knife. Still, if I could jump into a story and have any man/ghost I wanted, I would definitely choose swashbuckling Justin Catesby; the sexy pirate ghost who ends up being a huge help to Allie and Gabe. Yum, yum. Justin earns himself a 10 on my sexy hero meter. I honestly hope Ms. Miles finds a happily ever after for him in one of her future stories...
I highly recommend picking up MacGowan's Ghost. But be forewarned. As soon as you read this one, you will be running back to the book store to find Ms. Miles other stories. They ARE that addictive!
