Editorial Reviews

No comic explosion, but not quite a dud, no Wayne's World, but not The Ladies Man either, MacGruber does manage to pull off the seemingly impossible mission of expanding a 90-second one-joke Saturday Night Live sketch into a feature film. What's next: "Toonces the Cat Who Could Drive a Car"? In those MacGruber sketches, Will Forte's mullet-maned hero "makes life-saving inventions out of household materials" but always gets sidetracked as the bomb he's defusing ticks down to its last 20 seconds. Blown up for the big screen, MacGruber finds a bigger payoff whenever the film sidetracks from the standard-issue '80s action movie plot, as witness MacGruber's deranged revenge fantasies toward a driver who hurled a drive-by insult at his car. MacGruber's secret weapon is Val Kilmer as a megalomaniacal villain (his name, not appropriate for a family website, is a profanely puerile running joke) with a stolen Russian nuclear warhead and a grudge against MacGruber. MacGruber's somewhat less than A-team includes Vicki St. Elmo (SNL MVP Kristin Wiig), more into her music than into saving the world, and straight arrow Lieutenant Piper (Ryan Phillippe), who begins to question MacGruber's unorthodox tactics (one involving a diversionary stalk of celery is just one of the film's more jaw-dropping gross-out gags). MacGruber may not set the world on fire, but the insanely committed Forte, like MacGruber, will do anything, no matter how obscene, to complete his mission. Mission pretty much accomplished, particularly in a sex scene that is the most outrageous of its kind since Team America: World Police (albeit, thankfully, not as graphic). --Donald Liebenson

Product Description

Only one operative has been awarded 16 purple hearts, and only one guy is man enough to still sport a mullet. In the 10 years since his fiancée was killed, special op MacGruber has sworn off a life of fighting crime with his bare hands. But when he learns his country needs him to find a nuclear warhead that’s been stolen by his sworn enemy, Dieter VonCunth (Val Kilmer), MacGruber teams up with his trusty sidekick (SNL’s breakout star Kristen Wiig) and an uptight lieutenant (Ryan Phillippe) to get the job done. The trio sets out on a rampage of utter destruction in this action comedy that’s so over-the-top, it “makes The Hangover look like Beaches” (!

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated Over the Top Action/Comedy!!! October 24, 2010
A lot people trashed this movie, and I felt I had to throw my two cents in! I grew up watching 80's action flicks actually in the 80's and loved all the 80's action movie cliches and nods thrown in this movie! They even started the movie off with the whole "You're the best, and we need you back" schtick!! Cool!!! The people that trashed the movie just didn't understand the over the top humor, that's all. Ok, YES this movie is stupid. YES it has toilet humor. BUT it is SO over the top stupid that it's hilarious! If you like over the top 80's action movies, then why NOT give MacGruber a try??? I mean, MacGruber has a mullet, 16 purple hearts, and 3 Medals of honor! That in itself is so ridiculous it's AWESOME!! And the way MacGruber finishes the badguy? Well, let's just say any 80's action fan would be proud! I really liked all the actors too! They took it to the next level of sheer silliness! Mad Martigan (Val Kilmer) as the bad guy?? Perfect!!! There were only a couple of parts in the movie where I said "Hmmm..." but the rest? AWESOME!!! If you're not sure, rent it first, but any TRUE 80's action fan will understand the humor and laugh out loud! Give MacGruber a chance!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Throat-Ripping Adventure August 22, 2011
By KFBR392
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This movie at first seems horrible. Then the slow realization that it may be one of the better movies ever made starts to creep over you. Then it hits you. MacGruber is tits. If you think this movie is stupid, you deserve to have Will Forte rip your throat out with his bare hands. Three times. That's called a Turkey baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's go pound some... January 26, 2011
I went into watching this movie absolutely kicking and screaming. I had heard the SNL skits were not all that clever, and most spin-offs suffer an equally horrible demise at the box-office. I think the R-rating is what really helped Will Forte deliver his vision of what MacGruber stood for, and by all means, this turned out to be hands down one of the funniest comedies I have seen. I am almost embarrassed to say that I watched this movie four times last week.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what you would expect January 5, 2011
Awesome!!! I loved it. I went into it expecting a complete piece of crap and that may have skewed my opinion, but it was the funniest movie I've seen in years. You should watch it, you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars How in the world can you not like MacGruber?! April 13, 2011
This is a parody, therefore there will be 'moronic' and 'idiotic' moments, like many of the 1 star reviewers stated, but isn't that the point of a parody? Space Balls, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Hot Shots, Airplane, etc, don't all those films have there so called moronic and idiotic scenes? It's supposed to be to make it funnier! (Besides, moronic, stupid, idiotic, whatever you want to call it, it's hilarious!)

It has been a while since I laughed so hard during a movie. Many people praised 'The Hangover' for being hysterical and yet I did not laugh until the ending credits scene. This movie made me laugh the most and I don't remember a film that made me laugh so hard even when I watched it again.

I never witnessed MacGruber on SNL, so I didn't know what exactly to expect, apart from for what I saw on the trailer. With that said I don't think you have to be a fan of the mini sketch or have watched it for that matter to enjoy this movie.

Watch MacGruber and try NOT to laugh!

5.0 out of 5 stars OLD CELERY TRICK June 8, 2012
By Turk
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
You will want to watch this a few times so you catch all the subtleties. It is a fantastic movie!!

Piece of advice, when you use the old celery trick, you're gunna wanna go with the thick end, sounds counterintuitive...

For all the people that gave it one star, you have no sense of humor and are probably too busy utilizing the old celery trick to relax and enjoy a hilarious movie! It's rated R for a reason, if you didn't think there would be some inappropriate scenes, then you need to go back to watching PG or PG-13 movies!!

5.0 out of 5 stars B Clark August 9, 2011
By M Fried
If you like stupid/goofy humor you are going to love this movie! It's especially good if you watch it late at night when you are a little tired, which is when I enjoy this kind of humor the most. That's when I saw it for the 1st time, and I was in tears through most of the movie because I was laughing so hard!

Not the most sentimental movie on the market but it is good for cheap laughs. Wouldn't go to the theater to watch but worth a rent.

I like to think that MacGuyver himself would be a fan of this movie. It's action packed, and the romance isn't half bad either. I like how Iceman from Top Gun was in this movie. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Ehhh..
It's ok, but it's definitely not my favorite movie. I would recommend only if you REALLY like this character, otherwise, there are only a few gags that make you laugh out loud.
