Shameful quality, March 18, 2006
This review is from: MacGyver - The Complete Fourth Season (DVD)
I really hate having to give two stars for this, but Paramount should hang its head in shame for releasing any DVD set with quality this poor, and doubly so for such a well-loved series as this. I have at least one season of about 20 different TV series and the video in MacGyver by far the worse I've ever seen. Nothing in my collection looks anywhere near this bad, and I have shows of all ages and types. Oh, and the extras. There aren't any. Double shame on Paramount.
This just another case of Paramount figuring they can sell junk because the fan base is so loyal. The did something similar with the Star Trek series: good quality in that case, but no extras and exorbitant pricing (which they are only now starting to change). I haven't bought any MacGyver myself, but I've watched some of the DVDs that a neighbor of mine bought and I'd never give Paramount a dime for these, if only on principle.

Great memories, poor quality., March 17, 2006
This review is from: MacGyver - The Complete Fourth Season (DVD)
Well, this is my first MacGyver DVD purchase, and I have been looking forward to it for many years. I grew up with this show (I was in 6th grade when this season ran) and these episodes are pure nostaligic fun for me. This is the season that sticks in my memory the strongest, some of my favorite episodes are here, " On A Wing And A Prayer, " " The Secret Of Parker House, " " Blood Brothers, " " The Invisible Killer, " and my favorite MacGyver episode of all time, " The Survivors. " I just love Pete in that one, and Crandall and Wilcox, the hip shooting drug runners, are the most pleasantly cheesy villians of all time! This is MacGyver in it's prime. I always thought that the first few seasons were a little too political and James Bond-ish, especially as a kid watching, and the last two seasons were like community service programs, with too many " Save the Whales " kinds of messages. So as far as the material presented here, this collection easily gets 5 stars. However, there are problems.
The video quality is absolutely horrendous. I mean, REALLY bad. I found myself having to sit way back from my monitor or TV just to make this watchable. The images are pixelated and there seems to be a cross-hatching effect. And the sound is not much better. In fact, I have some episodes recorded on a VCR 20 years ago that look better than this! That was a big disappointment for me, this is not the way I wanted to relive MacGyver.
Also, there are absolutely no extras on these discs. Just the shows themselves, and while yes, the collection should be about the shows, it would have been nice to see some deleted scenes or blooper reels, or maybe a few interviews to add to the value. With the poor quality, I found myself wanting something more to make the purchase worthwhile.
So, I have to give a final rating of 3 stars, as much as I was hoping to give 5, because of the poor quality and lack of extras. If you are a real MacGyver freak, buy it, because you know you just want to see him again. If not, you might want to skip this one.

My favorite season, April 19, 2006
This review is from: MacGyver - The Complete Fourth Season (DVD)
This season has all you could ever want from MacGyver...Penny Parker and Murdoc in the same episode. It's got a brainwashed Jack, the root of MacGyver's gun problem and the first appearance of Cuba Gooding Jr. The end.
(Also, this is the first season that the Mullet solidifies itself)
