Editorial Reviews

About the Author

In 1987, the year Gary Rosenzweig started college,Drexel University in Philadelphia had the foresight to require every student to purchase a computer. Better still, they required that computer be a Macintosh.

From the 1987 Macintosh SE with two floppy disk drives and a little monochrome screen, to his current 2009 Mac Pro with two four-core Xeon processors, Gary has always owned a Mac.

His Mac was his primary tool used in creating games and websites from 1994 to the present day. But it wasn’t until 2007 that he took his love of Macs to the professional level with the launch of the MacMost site and video podcast.

At first,MacMost covered Apple news each week. But soon it evolved into a more frequent show with tutorials, tips, news, and reviews. The website grew as well, featuring iPhone games, ringtones, a weekly newsletter, and other features.

Gary has also written many books, most on programming using Macromedia/Adobe software like Director and Flash. He lives in Denver, Colorado, with his wife,Debby, and daughter, Luna. Also a dog and too many cats.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the book I wish I could have read a couple years back when I bought a MacBook, October 16, 2009
This review is from: MacMost.com Guide to Switching to the Mac (Paperback)
Length:: 2:36 Mins

The MacMost.com Guide to Switching to the Mac by Gary Rosenzweig is the book I wish I could have read a couple years back when I bought a MacBook.

I heard all of the Mac fanboy chatter about "once you go Mac, you never go back." But I got it, played with it, preferred the PC and went back.

The MacBook was nicely designed, but I was underwhelmed by it after all the hype. In the afterglow of experimenting with it, the MacBook has largely been a coaster for my drinks.

But after reading MacMost.com Guide to Switching to the Mac, I have to reconsider the Mac.

Back when I bought my MacBook, I was excited to edit video with it and got a "Quickstart Guide for iMovie." But those hundreds of pages didn't give me much of a quick start.

Then I looked at this MacMost.com Guide and found the simple basics for iMovie in just a couple pages. And that's typical of this book... it covers all of the questions and issues I had back then about moving over from a PC.

One thing I liked a lot about the MacBook was the built-in camera. I've had a couple Dell laptops with the built-in camera and they didn't measure up for recording video.

Anyhow, I am thinking of giving this Mac thing another try because of this book.

And I'd definitely encourage Mac users to check out the site of the book author, Gary Rosenzweig: http://macmost.com/

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference material, December 10, 2009
By
This review is from: MacMost.com Guide to Switching to the Mac (Paperback)
This is a well-written reference book for a first-time mac user. I love the organization of the book. I plan to read it in my downtime, but I also think it is great in order to come back to a specific area or topic. Apple offers a user session when you purchase your Mac, but a text tutorial is great for someone who would like to learn a Mac on his or her own time. In addition, this is much cheaper than the session Apple offers.
I recommend this for anyone switching to a Mac. I plan to share this with my father who is also switching to Apple.

I'm normally a fan of David Pogue's "Missing Manual" series books but have enjoyed Gary Rosenzweig's podcasts enough that I gave his book a try. As I'm a long-time Mac user, I actually bought the books as gifts for 3 friends who recently switched from Windows to Mac. So far all have enjoyed the book's tips and have commented that it is well-written.
