Customer Reviews

Overall, I think the thing will probably break within the year.

Read the fine print in the manual, if you close the enclosure, you cannot open it again without damaging the case.

With a WIFI enabled hard drive, you can free up space but still have access to your movies and shows.

We got this primarily so we didn't have to keep all of our media on our tablets and phones.
The Macally wifistor app is not bad and seems to support all of the media players we use. Speed is acceptable. Usability is OK (it's not pretty).
This isn't clear from the instructions (which are terse) but this does have a full SMB/CIFS/Samba server and http server built in. (Macally, if you are reading this you would sell more of these advertising this function!) You can access data on the device without the wifistor app if you want. I suspect the wifistor app is just a front end for SMB and http or webdav. GREAT plus. I would have bought it sooner if I had known that.
USB devices and SD cards can be removed and added without restarting. Supports both USB and SD cards at the same time. Does charge devices via microsd, but we don't use that function.
Now the bad news.
1. Won't work while charging. This killed it for us during long car trips. We need to leave it plugged in to a power source. We actually don't care about the battery as much as it working continously.
2. Leaving a USB flash drive in the USB port will drain the battery completely, even if the unit is powered off. Either it's trying to "charge" the usb flash drive or the LED that turns on when a drive is connected drains the battery.
3. The cover of the SD card slot is very hard to open. I was very tempted to just tear it off because it was so aggravating.

For each of these three issues they are either by design or our unit has three defects. I suspect it is the former.

If you can live with those issues then this is the unit for you.

EDIT: I need to clarify the "Won't work while charging." It appears that I was mistaken and it doesn't actually shut off. However, plugging it into a charger doesn't let it work continuously. It will not charge faster than it discharges during use.

Video files are big and add up quickly to fill up your tablet. With a WIFI enabled hard drive, you can free up space but still have access to your movies and shows. With a USB 3.0 and Ethernet connection, the Macally enclosure not only solves these storage issues, it provides some side benefits as well. Unfortunately, with limited WIFI range and unstable firmware, there is plenty of room for improvement.

Macally has the following advantage over similar devices:
- Ethernet port AND USB 3.0: Other enclosures on the market either do not include ethernet or is not USB 3.0. This enclosure has both. With Ethernet, the enclosure functions as a portable router and NAS.

Good:
- Transfer speed: USB 3.0 means transferring large files is FAST. I get 60Mb/sec.
- Files On-The-Go: Files are shared via HTTP if you use the WifiStor app or SAMBA if you use a computer.
- Battery life: I get about 3 hours because I have a SATA drive, not SSD. Life can be extended using any cell phone charger pack.
- Functions while charging: Plug in to car charger and no worries about batteries during a long road trip.
- Portable router/Wifi Repeater: In a hotel room, share the ethernet connection with the rest of your devices or use the WIFI repeater function and log in to the hotel’s gateway page only once for all devices.
- Acts as a NAS: Plug this into your router using an Ethernet cable and you have a nice Network storage device.

Bad:
- WIFI range is short. Because of additional interference you’d get in a hotel room (other wifi hotspots), WIFI wouldn’t even work across the room.

- Desperate need of a firmware upgrade:
-- Need automatic switching between Ethernet or Wifi.

Size Name: SD Card Verified Purchase
This product has some features that are difficult to figure out from the product description and even from the manual on the MacAlly website:

1. When your devices use the WiFiSD unit as a router, they can see each other, even if you are not connected to the internet. (Basically, you are your own little network.)

2. Pass-through WiFi is optional. At home, all of your devices can just connect through your home router. You can configure the WiFiSD device to also connect to your home router. The WiFiStor app found the my WiFiSD device automatically.

3. The device runs a Samba server. On my Mac, I can mount the SD card in the WiFiSD in the Mac OS X Finder wireless, by going to "Go -> Connect to Sever..." The device also appears as a shareable volume in the Finder's sidebar.

4. You can also connect to the unit using a web browser. Just type in its IP address.

5. When you have both an SD card and a flash drive or external USB drive attached, you can use a web browser and ask the unit to copy files & folders from the SD card to the flash drive. For example, you can take an SD card out of your camera and use the device to make a backup copy on a flash drive. (It does not look like this type of copying can be done using the WiFiStor app.)

6. I confirm that the unit can be operational while plugged into a power source. It is a bit unclear how long you need to push the on/off button, because the battery LED goes on when it is plugged in and that is the usual indication that the unit is coming on. You can push the on/off button until the WiFi light goes on.

7. The unit turns on if you plug in a flash drive. It does that because you can use the battery in the unit to charge your phone.
