I needed something to charge a handful of iPhones/iPods and an iPad; found the Macally Strip. It seemed to be *exactly* what I was looking for -- overnighted it while on vacation. (foreshadowing & cue ominous music: threw away all the packaging, but it was Macally (have used many of their products before w/o issue) After arriving at our next destination, I plugged in the multiple Apple iDevice cables and hooked them up to two iPhones and a single iPod touch. In the "high power" port I plugged in an iPad (original). After a second charging, everything started cycling through power cycles; the iPhones, iPad, and iPod touch kept chirping on and off until I unplugged the unit entirely.

UPDATED REVIEW

When I first bought the product, I thought it was a power strip with five charging ports; one of them being a high-power port for an iPad. It is not, it is an A/C plug with a hub, or a hub with A/C plugs; whatever you want to call it. As one of the other reviewers points out, only two ports actually deliver any juice with the unit plugged into the wall A/C (not a computer); the other USB ports are apparently only active when hooked up to a computer. It's not a bad idea, but I *really* thought it was a five-USB-port charging device. (at this point, I would like to see something like this with six to ten ports on it just for charging).

So I uprated my original one-star review to four; the knock is not for my misunderstanding, which would be unfair, but for the fact that three of the five ports do not give current when the unit is "merely" plugged into the wall.

There are a lot of cheap ac powered usb hub/charger devices on amazon. The quality of at least two that Ive tried, and most likely all, is reflected in the price you pay.

Dont make the mistake of doing the ol' third times the charm like i did and just get a quality product in the first place.

This is a quality product, in both look and performance.

First off, there are few products that fit this products exact description. It is ac powered, it functions as a usb hub, a dedicated charger, and a power strip, with a power switch to boot.

By hub, I mean it provides a usb OUT which allows communication bewtween your usb device and the computer you plug it up to via the out.

Power: For those that arent initiated, the standard usb power rating is 500 milliamps or .5 amps. The 4 usb ports that are part of the hub function as 1 amp when ac powered (which is twice what 99% of usb hubs provide), and .5 amps when only powered by the computer you have it hooked up to if an ac outlet is unavailable. This means that the hub actually functions as a descent charger while those items are hooked up to it when its ac powered. Many devices claim this or that, power wise, but this delivers, trust me.

Power Plus: In addition to the above average power rating for the usb hub ports, it provides a single stand alone dedicated usb charging port rated at A WHOPPING 2.1 AMPS. This is the highest rated ac usb charger i have seen and it comes on multi strip to boot. To put things into perspective, my ps vita charger from sony is rated at 1.5 amps, and is considered very powerful, relatively speaking. The vita is a power hog, and sony saw fit to cap the charger at 1.5 amps to charge that powerful little battery. The charger on this device is .

This power strip is well made, and has worked as expected over the past 1 month. I only need this one device to charge my iPhone, iPad and laptop. The downsides are this strip has a thick chord, which is a bit hard to manage. Also, I believe it only supports 110 v for the USB, and not 110-220 volts.

We got this primarily for my dad because he has a 3D projector that includes 6 pair of rechargeable glasses. The glasses all charge well on this USB hub so that we don't need to find multiple laptop USB outlets. It has different amp ratings so my mom is also able to charge her iPhone and iPad. The extra standard plugin outlets add convenience for other non-USB devices.

Why? Don't get me wrong, the MCALLY PORTABLE is a quality product and does exactly what it claims and the that end it does so very well. The reason for the measly 2-star rating, is simply because it's designer went too far. I bought it to sit under my bed and there to remain, quietly, awaiting its purpose, which is to charge my Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, etc) overnight. It does that and more, all except for the QUIET PART! No, it doesn't make noise but it does create too much LIGHT! Yep, the designer over did it by adding an "ALWAYS-ON" light built into the on-off switch. Alright, I can understand that, but it's still annoying and is so annoying that this USB charge is only worth Two of my precious STARS.

The only other problem is that it's about the only such USB charger out there. Good luck finding the perfect, quiet, USB charger; but in the meantime you might as well buy this one. Also note, I deleted this review with the idea in mind to see how long it takes "UNKNOWN" (the unknown reseller) to give this review a NO VOTE. I'm finding that even a slightly negative review draws an immediate negative vote, hence I suspect that there is a lot of Amazon "review farming" going on. Whatever, I'll just keep kicking the Macally under the bed, just to keep that awful green light from staring at me.
