While it lacks the sleek look of the Apple Pro mouse, the 2 buttons and scroll wheel (also clickable) are all fully programmable with the Macally mouse driver. (The cost is a bit of processor time and memory.) Even without the driver installed, you do get left & right click and wheel scrolling, just not all the other choices. Right from the start it works with pretty much all applications, whether with or without the driver installed. (Running OS X, 10.4.2 on a G4 iMac)
The shape is also slightly more comfortable in the hand than the Apple mouse; all that's missing is the look.

Complete letdown,

I've been a Macally fan for years. I won't touch an Apple keyboard, if I can help it, and their mice have always been poorly designed rubbish (anyone remember the iMac puck mouse?), whereas their Macally counterparts were top notch. Well, my Macally iSweetNet mouse started acting up, so naturally I turned to Macally for a replacement. I got this particular model because I figured with the solid white body, the red glare from the optical sensor would be minimized. My mistake. There is a ridiculous amount of extraneous light set off from this mouse, making it no better than a clear body version in that respect. While that was surprising, it wasn't a deal breaker. What got to me was that it just simply stopped working properly after only four months. All of the sudden, it just started to lose its connection to my computer intermittently. I got so upset with it, I just ripped it from my machine and threw it against the wall. This all happened, of course, after half my applications wouldn't perform using the Macally mouse drivers--anything related to Java for some reason slowed the mouse down to a 1 to 1 mapping, making it barely functional in those programs. I finally chucked the drivers and went with Alessandro Levi Montalcini's excellent USB Overdrive shareware driver, which made the mouse work properly. At least, until it decided that communication with my machine was optional. I can't say how disappointed I am with this product. Macally never let me down before, but I won't be buying another mouse from them any time soon. I just picked up a Logitech optical, and with any luck, it will last longer than this Macally piece of junk. I don't like the form factor as much, but if it performs, I'll learn to love it. Anyone thinking about this Macally mouse, I'd advise you to move on. They've lost a step, somewhere along the line.

Erratic Mouse,

I tried to use this mouse with my Mac G4 and it is erratic and all over the desktop and therefore unusable. The driver install went all right, but after all looked good, a belated error message showed up that something was wrong with an extension. The pdf handbook that comes on the accompanying CD contains no useful info and does not provide info for fixes. It does indicate an address for tech support. I emailed tech support and received no answer.

STOPPED WORKING AFTER 2 MONTHS,

After owning this mouse for about 2 months, it stopped working for no good reason. I took good care of it too; I had it on my desk, never spilled anything on it or got it dirty, and then it just stopped working only 2 months after buying it brand new from Amazon! Big waste of money!

Great Mouse!,

Solid construction. Nice feel. If you are looking to replace your one button mouse or just your worn out mouse, this would be the way to go. I've owned two of them and I have to say that Macally makes quality products!

Nice looking mouse, wheel moves well, slim design, but I couldn't get the software to work properly on my G4 933 running OSX 10.3.9. System refused to recognize the mouse so I couldn't set any of the preferences. Emailed Macally support and they sent me what they called the correct and most up to date driver, but same problem. Had to return the mouse to Amazon for a refund. Replaced with a Logitech MX1000 Laser. Just installed the software it works! I'm just trying it out and will post a review soon. I've justed several Logitech mice and have never been disappointed.

Wonderful Economical Mouse,

I was switching from my wireless mouse, which was a serious battery hog, and simply wanted a low cost replacement. This little two-button mouse with a scrolling wheel is MUCH nicer than my more costly wireless mouse -- and the "convenience" of wireless is highly over-rated.

After a couple months, both buttons stopped working. I had to press so hard to activate a "click," use became impractical. Also, plastic housing never quite fit right and kept popping off.

Sorry to say our Macally Icemouse stopped working properly within a couple of years of purchase. Often the mouse now signals a double click to the computer when only a single click has been made. Click and drag also does not work right. I'll be replacing it with an Apple Magic Mouse.

I have three of these mice, all gathering dust: the first, a Christmas present; the second, obtained when the Christmas present died; the third, a replacement for my wife who confiscated the second mouse and liked its light weight even though it was explained that the mouse was a cheap, poorly constructed product which accounted for its light weight. All three mice died, all very soon after the end of warranty - how's that for precise product engineering? Do you think Macally will provide any replacement or reduction in price even if it's only a couple of weeks past warranty expiration - NO! - absolutely not!
As to the problems: initially, the scroll wheel begins to fail and finally does. Shortly after the scroll wheel begins failing, when the pointer is placed in an open window or pane of a browser, the window or pane jumps up and down by 1/2"±. Needless to say this makes it difficult to track and select what your after in either window or pane. This finally becomes intolerable as you scrabble about trying to open the file that you want or select your item in the web page. As to tech support, a joke. There seems to be only one techie who does not speak the King's - er - Queen's English. His comments concerning mouse failure proceed along the lines of "you have been failing to properly be of installing the driver software. You must begin again to properly be of installing. This will be of solution to your problem." End of discussion, if you can call it that. What Macally calls customer support appears to be only one very rude young woman who is incapable of operating outside her very limited training box. No customer support/help here. Suffice it to say, I will not purchase any Macally product of any sort again if I can avoid doing so. As to the mouse, a poor product with poor support and, in my opinion, an extremely poor company as well. My advice, do not buy. Essentially, junk. |
