Editorial Reviews

Review

'The book provided some new insights both on the personal level and in terms of global politics on the clash between the most ancient and the youngest 19th century empires.' Andre W. Sleeswyk, The Mariner's Mirror

'He has researched thoroughly and deeply in the archives and consulted published sources on the history of Macao ... it is so well-written that the historical actors come alive ... In particular, it assists readers in gaining insights into the Chinese mentailty ... the book makes clear what is distinct about China.' Manuel E.L. Vilarinho, Museu Maritimo de Macau, International Journal of Maritime History

This review is from: Macao and the British 1637-1842: Prelude to Hong Kong (Paperback)
A gentle, ambulating foray into the history of this fascinating city, Coates uses a measured tone to evoke an enchanting past, filled with rich characters, intrigue and a sense of history in the making. The kind of book you'll come back to again and again. The world he evokes is so rich you don't want the book to end. Do buy - Coates is a rare scholar and writer - hard to find these days.
