One of the most accessible studies on the history of the development of British trade with China between 1637, the first voyage to China, and 1842, the founding of Hong Kong. Austin Coates has contributed a new foreword to this edition.

Enchanting,
By Wilhelm Snyman "Wilhelm Snyman" (Cape Town, W Cape South Africa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Macao and the British 1637-1842: Prelude to Hong Kong (Paperback)
A gentle, ambulating foray into the history of this fascinating city, Coates uses a measured tone to evoke an enchanting past, filled with rich characters, intrigue and a sense of history in the making. The kind of book you'll come back to again and again. The world he evokes is so rich you don't want the book to end. Do buy - Coates is a rare scholar and writer - hard to find these days.
